Scotland has initiated a new gonorrhoea vaccine program, marking a significant step in addressing the growing public health concern. This move comes as part of a broader UK-wide effort to combat a sharp increase in cases of this sexually transmitted infection (STI). Gonorrhoea, the second most common STI in Scotland, can cause severe discomfort and, in rare instances, life-threatening complications.

This is due to the close genetic relationship between the bacteria causing meningitis B and gonorrhoea, which allows the MenB vaccine to reduce gonorrhoea cases by approximately one-third.

However, it is important to note that the vaccine does not eliminate the risk of contracting gonorrhoea entirely. The infection is typically transmitted through unprotected sexual activity. Despite this, experts believe the vaccine is still valuable. Prof Andrew Pollard, chairman of the JCVI, described it as “worth having” and highlighted its potential to make a significant impact overall.

Challenges in Treating Gonorrhoea

Gonorrhoea is becoming increasingly difficult to treat, with many cases currently managed using a single dose of antibiotics. However, the bacterium responsible for the infection has a long history of developing resistance to these treatments.
