Dementia cases were identified through self-reported diagnoses or death certificates, and medical records were reviewed to confirm each case.

To gather genetic data, researchers analyzed blood samples collected over decades. Genotyping identified key risk factors, including the APOE4 gene, while advanced blood analysis measured hundreds of biomarkers.
