Enhancing Nepal’s Capabilities with Advanced Aircraft

The United States has recently delivered two new M28 Skytrucks to the Nepali Army, marking a significant step in strengthening bilateral ties and enhancing Nepal's disaster response capabilities. This delivery, part of a $37 million Foreign Military Financing (FMF) grant, adds to the existing fleet of five Skytrucks, which includes two provided by the US in 2019 and one purchased directly by Nepal.

This handover highlights the deepening partnership between the two nations, focusing on improving Nepal's resilience, security, and ability to respond to emergencies. The US government has also announced plans to provide two Bell helicopters soon, further expanding Nepal’s aerial resources.

A Ceremony Marking Strategic Cooperation

The official handover took place at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, where US Ambassador Dean Thompson presented the aircraft to senior Nepali Army officials. The event was attended by high-ranking government officials, including Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba, Defense Minister Manbir Rai, Chief of Army Staff Ashok Raj Sigdel, and representatives from the US State Department and the aircraft manufacturer PZL Mielec.

During his remarks, Foreign Affairs Minister Arzu Rana Deuba emphasized the importance of this moment, stating that it not only enhances the Nepali Army's disaster response capabilities but also symbolizes the enduring friendship and cooperation between Nepal and the United States. She highlighted the long-standing relationship between the two countries, noting that the US has consistently supported Nepal in areas such as governance, humanitarian assistance, disaster response, peacekeeping, and capacity building.

Strengthening Ties Through Shared Goals

Minister Deuba reiterated that Nepal and the US share a sustainable and trust-based relationship, rooted in mutual respect and collaboration. She praised the Nepali Army for its dedication to national interests, global peace, and security, and expressed gratitude for the continued support from the US.

US Ambassador Thompson echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the vital role these aircraft will play in Nepal's emergency response efforts. He described the Skytrucks as "lifelines" that will enable faster and more effective responses to crises across the country. The delivery is part of a broader security cooperation initiative that includes training, exchanges, equipment transfers, and planning, all aimed at making Nepal more resilient and secure.

Technical Advantages of the M28 Skytrucks

Manufactured by PZL Mielec, a subsidiary of Lockheed Martin, the M28 Skytrucks are well-suited for Nepal’s challenging terrain. Their short takeoff and landing capability allows them to operate from remote and rugged airstrips, making them ideal for reaching isolated areas during emergencies.

One of the aircraft delivered today is configured as an air ambulance, equipped for medical evacuations and stretcher transport. These features significantly enhance the Nepali Army’s ability to conduct disaster response, medical evacuations, and humanitarian missions, ultimately helping to save lives across the country.

A Commitment to Long-Term Partnership

The US statement noted that this delivery reinforces the United States' commitment to supporting Nepal's ability to respond quickly to crises and protect its people. It also builds upon the 78 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations, reflecting a shared vision of peace, stability, and humanitarian service.

Through these strategic investments, the US continues to demonstrate its role as a reliable partner in Nepal’s development and security efforts. The addition of these advanced aircraft underscores the growing collaboration between the two countries, ensuring that Nepal is better prepared to face future challenges.
