Woman Texting with Both Hands While Driving Crashes Rental Car Then Screams in Fury

The Dangers of Distracted Driving Exposed
Dashcam footage has revealed the shocking moment when a woman, who was texting while driving, lost control of a rental car and crashed into a street sign. The incident highlights the growing concern over distracted driving and the consequences of such reckless behavior.
In the video, the unnamed woman is seen holding her phone with both hands as she drives down the road. Moments later, the vehicle veers off the road and smashes into a street sign. As the car comes to a stop, the woman is heard screaming and slurring, clearly realizing that she had lost control of the vehicle. She then places her head in her hands and wails in frustration.
The woman had rented the car from Jose Arevalo, an 18-year-old from Arlington, Washington. He had rented out his 2013 Nissan Leaf through the car-sharing app Turo on August 25. Just hours before the scheduled return of the keys, the woman sent him a message claiming she had been "driven off the road" and that the car was being towed. However, after reviewing the dashcam footage, Jose discovered the truth behind the accident.
"I was shocked when I saw the dashcam," Jose said. "I believed what she texted me and thought someone had really driven her off the road. To see her so blatantly texting and then so clearly lie about it seemed so strange to me."
According to Jose, the woman later sent a follow-up message saying she had filed a report with the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office and opened a claim with Turo. However, neither of these reports mentioned anything about her texting while driving.
Jose had only started renting out his car a week earlier to make extra money after his work hours were cut short. He had installed the dashcam six months prior for safety and always informed his renters about it.
"One of the first things I thought of when she texted me about the accident was the dashcam, but she didn't say anything about it," he explained. "I just took her word on what happened because I figured, who would lie on a police report?"
The repair costs for the damaged car came to $4,959, which Jose says is more than the cost of a new car. This incident underscores the financial and emotional toll that distracted driving can take on individuals and communities.
A Similar Case in the UK
This incident is not isolated. In the UK, a van driver named Nathan Cole caused life-changing injuries to another driver after getting distracted by his phone. Cole was driving a Volkswagen van at high speeds on the A27 in West Sussex when he failed to notice a Peugeot that had stopped on the hard shoulder. He careered into the back of the stationary vehicle, causing devastating injuries to the other driver, who required surgery to have their leg amputated and spent time in a coma.
Dashcam footage shows Cole repeatedly looking down while driving at 72mph—12mph over the speed limit. The video captures the moment the broken-down car comes into view before Cole crashes into it. His airbag deploys, and he exits the vehicle.
Cole, from Brighton, admitted to causing serious injury by dangerous driving at a hearing at Worthing Magistrates' Court on April 8. He was later sentenced to two years and four months in prison and disqualified from driving for the same period.
These cases highlight the urgent need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and increased awareness about the dangers of distracted driving. As technology continues to evolve, so too must our efforts to ensure road safety for all drivers.
