15-Minute Break Boosts Wellbeing as Much as a Wellness Retreat
The Power of a 15-Minute Exercise Break
A recent study has revealed that a simple 15-minute exercise break can be just as effective in improving mental wellbeing as a wellness retreat. Whether it's a short walk, a dance session, or a home workout, experts suggest that even brief physical activity can significantly enhance mood.
A survey conducted with 10,000 individuals who had recently attended a wellness retreat found that 71% of them believed daily movement was more effective at reducing stress than their expensive holiday. This finding is particularly relevant given the rising demand for wellness retreats, which have increased by 33% in the past year alone. On average, these retreats cost over £1,000, yet experts argue that consistent, short daily exercises are more beneficial than such fad holidays.
Despite this, data from the NHS indicates that a quarter of people engage in less than half an hour of exercise per week. The reason even a short period of exercise can impact mental wellbeing lies in the release of neurotransmitters—chemical messengers that help regulate mood, reduce anxiety, and improve resilience to stress.
Last year, a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) showed that regular 15-minute periods of exercise could reduce the risk of death from cardiovascular disease by 27%.

Dr. Brendon Stubbs, a researcher at King’s College London who led the survey in collaboration with the sportswear brand ASICS, commented: “It’s incredible to see the impact that 15 minutes of movement can have on mental wellbeing. It shows that any level of exercise, from a lunchtime walk to playing padel, is beneficial as long as it is consistent.”
He continued: “When it comes to the benefit of exercise on wellbeing, what the research shows is that there is an increasing improvement in reported mood up until an hour of daily movement. What is important is that 15 minutes is a low barrier to entry, but we still see an improvement in mental wellbeing—and it does not need to be overly strenuous to have that effect.”
Dr. Stubbs added: “There is also an added benefit to your mood if you are able to do the activity outside and if you are able to do it with a friend.”
Benefits of Short Exercise Sessions
- Improved Mood: Even brief physical activity can lead to a noticeable improvement in mood.
- Stress Reduction: Regular movement helps reduce stress levels effectively.
- Enhanced Resilience: Exercise boosts the body’s ability to handle stress.
- Cardiovascular Health: Studies show that 15-minute sessions can lower the risk of heart-related deaths.
- Accessibility: A 15-minute routine is easy to fit into a busy schedule.
Why Choose Daily Movement Over Wellness Retreats?
- Cost-Effective: Unlike expensive retreats, daily exercise requires no significant financial investment.
- Consistency: Regular, short sessions are easier to maintain over time.
- Sustainability: Small habits are more likely to become long-term routines.
- Accessibility: No need to travel or take time off work.
- Mental Health Impact: The psychological benefits of daily movement are comparable to those of a wellness retreat.
Tips for Incorporating 15-Minute Workouts
- Start Small: Begin with a 15-minute walk during your lunch break.
- Mix It Up: Try different activities like yoga, dancing, or cycling to keep it interesting.
- Go Outside: Exercising in nature can boost mood and provide additional health benefits.
- Invite a Friend: Working out with someone can make the experience more enjoyable and motivating.
- Stay Consistent: Aim for daily movement, even if it’s just a few minutes.
The findings from this research highlight the importance of integrating physical activity into daily life. Whether it's a quick walk, a dance session, or a home workout, the benefits of even a short exercise break are clear. With the right approach, anyone can improve their mental wellbeing without the need for costly retreats or extensive time commitments.
