A Vietnamese Woman Leads AI Innovation at America's Oldest Airline

A Journey from Economics to AI

Nguyen Khanh Vy's story is a testament to the power of reinvention and ambition. From an economics graduate in Ho Chi Minh City to an AI specialist at Delta Air Lines, her career path has been nothing short of extraordinary. At just 28 years old, she now works in machine learning and artificial intelligence at Delta, one of the world’s largest airlines, which operates around 4,000 flights daily across the globe.

Her team is responsible for developing AI tools that analyze vast amounts of data to predict flight operations. This includes everything from gate assignments to route and weather suggestions. These tools are essential for optimizing airline efficiency and ensuring smooth operations.

One of Vy's most recent contributions was an AI system designed to summarize the lengthy reports pilots often submit after flights. "Pilots frequently send 'letters from the heart' detailing problems they encountered during their flights," she explained. "With thousands of pilots, manually processing these reports was time-consuming and inefficient. Since implementing this AI tool, we've seen a significant improvement in processing speed."

Navigating a Non-Traditional Path

Vy's journey to aviation AI was far from linear. After earning her economics degree in 2019, she pursued an MBA in Florida and later worked in data management at a U.S. consumer goods company. However, she quickly realized that her technical skills were lacking. Determined to grow, she decided to quit her job and pursue a master's in data science at the University of Pennsylvania.

It was during her studies that Vy's interest in AI deepened. A class on AI reasoning, combined with the rise of generative AI tools like ChatGPT, sparked her curiosity. She immersed herself in research, reading three to four papers a week and critically analyzing AI systems. "I gradually realized that AI would play a crucial role in every field, including data, so I decided to dig deeper," she recalled.

Building AI Tools and Making an Impact

Vy went on to build several AI tools, including a research summarizer for IEEE and a chatbot that supported psychological studies for hundreds of patients. Her work demonstrated not only her technical prowess but also her ability to apply AI in meaningful ways.

After graduating in late 2024, Vy successfully navigated six rounds of selection to land her job at Delta. The process included four stages that tested her technical knowledge and cultural fit, as well as two that focused on ability assessments.

Sharing Knowledge and Inspiring Others

Beyond her professional achievements, Vy is passionate about sharing her knowledge with young learners. For advanced groups, she demonstrates how to train AI on domain-specific data and integrate tools like ChatGPT into workflows. For broader audiences, she teaches simple applications such as using AI for learning English or crafting better prompts.

Dinh Ngoc Thanh, vice president of the Global Vietnamese Young Intellectuals Network, praised Vy for her unique ability to make AI accessible. "Vy has the talent for sharing knowledge and always prepares her lessons in a clear and structured way," he said.

Embracing AI as a Collaborator

Vy believes the right mindset is to treat AI as a collaborator rather than a replacement. She illustrates this by teaching people how to research pollution in Hanoi using ChatGPT. Instead of simply asking the AI to "write me a report on environmental pollution," she encourages users to provide a structure, require specific data and sources, and enable search tools.

"If we set up the framework, inputs and outputs clearly with transparency, the results will be much better," she said. This approach not only enhances the quality of the output but also empowers users to take control of their AI interactions.
