Algeria's Stance on Saudi Mediation Efforts

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has made it clear that his country is not ready to reopen its borders with Morocco, despite a recent Saudi initiative aimed at easing tensions between the two North African nations. The strained relationship between Algeria and Morocco began in August 2021, and Tebboune’s recent remarks during an address to high-ranking military officials have further highlighted the complexities of the situation.

Tebboune stated, «There are brothers, acting in good faith, who ask us to reopen the borders» with Morocco. However, he emphasized that the closure of the borders was not due to the Western Sahara issue, but rather for other reasons. He pointed out that over the 63 years of Algeria’s independence, the borders have been closed for more than 45 years. Prince Turki delivered a «verbal message» from Mohammed bin Salman, further highlighting the involvement of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the ongoing diplomatic efforts.

It is important to note that President Tebboune has previously rejected mediation efforts from Arab countries.
