Amazon Prime and Netflix Attend Mashariki African Film Festival

The 2025 Mashariki African Film Festival: A Platform for Global Recognition

The 2025 Mashariki African Film Festival (MAAF) is set to be a landmark event in the African film industry, offering more than just awards. This year’s festival will feature a grand prize of cars, but its true value lies in the opportunities it presents for filmmakers and content creators. Alongside this, the festival will serve as a hub for major film projects that could capture the attention of global investors, including platforms like Amazon Prime and Netflix.

According to Tresor Senga, CEO of MAFF, representatives from both Amazon Prime and Netflix are expected to attend the festival, which will take place from November 22 to 29 in Kigali. These streaming giants are among the world's leading movie platforms, and their presence at the festival signals a significant opportunity for African filmmakers.

“We shall have people representing Netflix and Amazon Prime at our festival. That means that exhibitors have to bring on projects that meet the standards of their caliber,” Senga said. “We hope to have them at our film market during which they can network with filmmakers and have a glimpse of top film projects. I believe this is an opportunity for filmmakers to get their films ready and present the projects to them.”

A New Era of Collaboration and Innovation

One of the key highlights of the 2025 MAAF is the introduction of the 'Masharket,' also known as the 'Mahsariki Market.' This international content market platform is designed to nurture creativity, build capacity, and connect talent with industry opportunities. It underscores the festival's commitment to both artistic recognition and meaningful rewards for African talent.

During the festival, participants will engage in a variety of activities, including daily film screenings, workshops on virtual reality (VR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) as tools for film production. These workshops aim to equip filmmakers with the latest technologies and techniques to enhance their storytelling.

Opportunities for Funding and Exposure

Festival organizers will also begin receiving film projects from African filmmakers and beyond. The best projects will be selected and pushed for funding opportunities. A jury comprising judges from Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and East Africa will evaluate the submissions.

Synopsis submissions for these projects will start on October 1 and continue until October 20. According to Senga, the goal is to pitch the best projects on the Saudi Arabian market for potential funding.

Key Activities at the Festival

  • Daily Film Screenings: Attendees will have the chance to watch a wide range of films from across Africa and beyond.
  • Workshops on VR and AI: These sessions will focus on how emerging technologies can be used in film production.
  • Film Market and Networking: Filmmakers will have the opportunity to showcase their projects to potential investors and industry professionals.
  • Jury Evaluation: A panel of international judges will select the most promising film projects for funding and exposure.

A Platform for Global Investment

The involvement of major streaming platforms like Amazon Prime and Netflix highlights the growing interest in African cinema. Their presence at the festival not only validates the quality of African filmmaking but also opens doors for increased investment and collaboration.

As the festival approaches, anticipation is building around the potential for new partnerships and the discovery of fresh talent. With a strong focus on innovation, creativity, and global engagement, the 2025 MAAF is poised to become a pivotal event in the African film landscape.
