Angelina Jolie Repaid Brad Pitt's Loan with Interest After Divorce

Financial Struggles and Legal Disputes
Angelina Jolie faced significant financial challenges after her divorce from Brad Pitt, opting not to request spousal support but instead taking out a loan from him with interest, as revealed in recent court documents. The Oscar-winning actress, now 50, submitted new filings to the Los Angeles Superior Court on October 6, which are part of her ongoing legal battle with Pitt, 61, over the ownership of Château Miraval, the French estate and winery they once co-owned.
In her declaration, Jolie explained that she gave Pitt "control (and full residency) of our family homes in Los Angeles and at Miraval, without compensation, which I hoped would make him calmer in his dealings with me after a difficult and traumatic period." She emphasized that her savings were "tied up in Miraval" and that she had not sought "alimony or any other financial support" from the "Fight Club" actor.
The filing also highlighted that Jolie's financial situation became so dire that she could not afford to purchase a home outright in Los Angeles, leading Pitt to agree to lend her money "with interest." Jolie mentioned that in early 2017, she discussed selling her stake in Miraval to Pitt, but these negotiations were "always difficult" due to her "deep emotional ties" to the property and "how [their] relationship ended."
Ongoing Legal Battle
Jolie and Pitt, who separated in 2016 after 12 years together and two years of marriage, finalized their divorce in December 2024. However, their legal dispute over Miraval continues. In February 2022, Pitt sued Jolie, claiming she sold her 50% stake in the winery to Tenute del Mondo, a wine division of the Stoli Group, without his consent, violating an alleged prior agreement that neither could sell without the other’s approval.
In response, Jolie filed a countersuit in September 2022, alleging that Pitt had been "waging a vindictive war against" her since their 2016 separation. In her latest filing, Jolie described Miraval as "one of the first major investments" she and Pitt made during their relationship. "It was a focal point of our family life," she wrote. "We were married there, I spent part of my pregnancy there, and I brought our twin children home there from the hospital. To have such a sudden break from my home and memories has been hard, and it was especially difficult for the children to have their lives so disrupted."
Personal History and Family Dynamics
Jolie and Pitt first met on the set of "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" in 2005 while Pitt was still married to Jennifer Aniston. The couple wed in 2014 and share six children: Maddox, 24, Pax, 21, Zahara, 20, Shiloh, 19, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 17. The "Maleficent" star stated that she and her children "have never again set foot" at Miraval because of its "connection to the painful events leading to the divorce."
Following their split, Jolie was granted primary custody, and several of their children have reportedly distanced themselves from Pitt, with only their youngest son, Knox, maintaining regular contact. This shift in family dynamics underscores the lasting impact of their relationship and the ongoing emotional and legal complexities surrounding their shared history.
