Cambodia's Insurance Market Hits $9.07B in July

Overview of Cambodia's Insurance Market in July 2025
Cambodia’s insurance market experienced a mixed performance in July 2025, with several key metrics showing both positive and negative trends. While gross premiums declined, there were notable increases in the number of policies, the total sum insured, and overall claims. This combination of factors highlights the complex dynamics at play within the sector.
Premium Trends
Gross premiums for the month fell by 4.42% compared to July 2024, decreasing from $33.57 million to $32.09 million. This decline was observed across both general and life insurance segments. General insurance premiums dropped significantly by 7.77%, reaching $13.06 million, while life insurance premiums saw a more modest decrease of 1.98%, settling at $19.03 million.
Despite this drop in premium income, the market showed strong growth in other areas, particularly in the number of policies issued.
Policy Growth
The number of policies in the market surged dramatically, increasing by 340.99% year-on-year. Total policies rose to 461,441, compared to 104,638 in the same period the previous year. This growth was driven by both general and life insurance segments. General insurance policies grew by 200.29% to 65,848, while life insurance policies saw an even more substantial increase of 378.29%, reaching 395,593.
This sharp rise in policy numbers suggests that more individuals and businesses are turning to insurance as a means of risk management, despite the overall decline in premiums.
Sum Insured Increases
The total sum insured also saw significant growth, rising by 45.23% year-on-year to reach $9.07 billion. General insurance contributed the largest share of this increase, with the sum insured reaching $7.26 billion, up 55.15%. Life insurance also recorded growth, with the sum insured reaching $1.81 billion, an increase of 15.64%.
This trend indicates that policyholders are insuring higher values, which could be due to increased awareness of insurance benefits or changes in consumer behavior.
Claims Performance
Gross claims incurred in July 2025 increased overall by 21.47%, reaching $7.55 million. However, the performance varied between general and life insurance. General insurance claims rose sharply by 68.88% to $5.68 million, indicating a possible increase in incidents or higher claim settlements. In contrast, life insurance claims decreased by 34.46% to $1.87 million, suggesting fewer claims being filed or lower payout amounts.
Key Takeaways
- Premiums declined across both general and life insurance segments.
- Policies increased significantly, showing growing demand for insurance coverage.
- Sum insured rose substantially, reflecting higher risk exposure or value of insured assets.
- Claims performance varied, with general insurance seeing a large increase and life insurance experiencing a decrease.
These developments suggest that while the insurance market in Cambodia is facing challenges in terms of premium income, it is still expanding in other critical areas. The future performance of the sector will likely depend on how these trends evolve and how insurers respond to changing market conditions.
