Criminal Networks Leveraging Tech to Boost Operations - IGP

Addressing the Evolving Threats from Criminal Gangs

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, recently highlighted a growing concern regarding the increasing use of technology by criminal gangs to carry out their activities. This warning came during an executive capacity building workshop for top leadership of the Nigeria Police Force at the Nigerian Police Resource Centre in Abuja.

Egbetokun emphasized that the adversaries faced by the police are not only persistent but also highly adaptive. He pointed out that these groups continuously change their strategies to avoid defeat, making it essential for the police force to remain vigilant and innovative.

The IGP's remarks were made in response to a series of violent incidents involving security operatives. Recent reports indicate that 53 security personnel have been killed in the past two weeks. These victims include soldiers, police officers, members of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), immigration and customs officers, vigilantes, and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF) as well as state community watch groups.

During the workshop, Egbetokun stressed the need for top commanders to possess foresight, creativity, and agility. He explained that the current environment is one of constant flux, requiring leaders to be both patient and quick in their decision-making. The complexity of modern threats demands more than just courage; it requires a combination of patience with speed, endurance with imagination, and strategy with unshakable resolve.

The Role of Technology in Criminal Activities

Criminal syndicates are leveraging technology to expand their reach, while terrorist networks rebrand and reorganize to evade capture. Local conflicts, once confined to specific regions, now cross borders, amplified by social media and transnational alliances. This shift necessitates a new approach to security and law enforcement.

Egbetokun noted that the theme of the workshop was chosen carefully to prepare leaders to anticipate, adapt, and act decisively in an environment where hesitation can be costly. He urged the participants to embrace the challenges ahead with a sense of urgency and determination.

Commitment to Peace and Security

In addition to the IGP's address, Nathaniel Awuapila, President of the Society for Peace Studies and Practice (SPSP), spoke about the organization's commitment to advancing peace and security. He outlined the society's focus on research, advocacy, capacity building, and professional diligence. The SPSP aims to contribute to a safer and more stable Nigeria through its various initiatives.

Preparing for the Future

As the threat landscape continues to evolve, the Nigeria Police Force must remain proactive in its approach. This includes investing in training, adopting new technologies, and fostering collaboration with other security agencies and international partners. By doing so, the force can better equip itself to face the challenges of the future.

Leadership within the police force must also evolve. It is crucial for commanders to lead with vision and flexibility, ensuring that they can respond effectively to emerging threats. This involves not only developing strategic plans but also being ready to adjust them as circumstances change.

In conclusion, the insights shared by Egbetokun and other experts underscore the importance of adaptability and innovation in combating crime. As criminal activities become more sophisticated, the police force must rise to the occasion, embracing new methods and approaches to ensure the safety and security of the nation.
