Criminal Networks Leveraging Tech to Fuel Expansion - IGP

Addressing the Evolving Threats to National Security
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has raised concerns about the increasing use of technology by criminal gangs to carry out their activities. This warning came during an executive capacity building workshop for top leadership of the Nigeria Police Force at the Nigerian Police Resource Centre in Abuja.
Egbetokun emphasized that the police force must be proactive in countering these threats. He highlighted the need for top commanders to possess foresight, creativity, and agility in a rapidly changing environment. These qualities, he argued, are essential to effectively combat modern-day criminals, including terrorists.
The IGP's remarks were made in response to a surge in attacks on security operatives across the country. According to recent reports, 53 security personnel have been killed in the last two weeks alone. The victims included soldiers, police officers, members of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), immigration and customs officers, vigilantes, and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF) and state community watch groups.
Adaptable Criminal Networks
Egbetokun pointed out that criminals are not only persistent but also highly adaptive. He noted that they continuously change strategies to avoid defeat. "Criminal syndicates exploit technology to expand their reach. Terrorist networks rebrand and reorganise to avoid defeat," he said.
He further explained that local conflicts, once contained within specific regions, are now spreading across borders due to the influence of social media and transnational alliances. This trend, he added, presents a complex challenge that requires more than just courage from the security forces.
"The complexity demands more from us than courage alone. It demands foresight, creativity, and the agility to lead in an environment of constant flux," Egbetokun stated. He urged leaders to combine patience with speed, endurance with imagination, and strategy with unshakable resolve.
Preparing for the Future
The IGP explained that the theme of the workshop was carefully chosen to prepare leaders to anticipate, adapt, and act decisively in an environment where hesitation is costly and speed is survival. "That is why this theme has been carefully chosen," he said.
The workshop aimed to equip top commanders with the necessary skills and knowledge to navigate the challenges posed by evolving criminal activities. It focused on enhancing leadership capabilities, improving strategic planning, and fostering a culture of innovation within the police force.
Commitment to Peace and Security
Earlier in the event, Nathaniel Awuapila, President of the Society for Peace Studies and Practice (SPSP), spoke about the organization's commitment to advancing peace and security. He emphasized the importance of research, advocacy, capacity building, and professional diligence in achieving this goal.
Awuapila highlighted the role of the SPSP in promoting sustainable peace through various initiatives. He expressed confidence in the ability of the police force to overcome current challenges and contribute to national stability.
Conclusion
As the threat landscape continues to evolve, it is clear that the Nigeria Police Force must remain vigilant and adaptable. The insights shared by the IGP and other experts underscore the need for continuous learning and innovation. By fostering a culture of resilience and forward-thinking leadership, the police force can better protect the nation and its citizens against emerging threats.
