Criminal Syndicates Leverage Tech to Grow, IGP Sounds Warning

Addressing the Evolving Threats to National Security

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, recently highlighted a growing concern regarding the increasing use of technology by criminal gangs in Nigeria. He emphasized that these groups are leveraging modern tools and techniques to carry out their activities with greater efficiency and reach. This development has raised alarms among security officials, who are now tasked with countering these sophisticated threats.

Egbetokun spoke during an executive capacity building workshop organized for the top leadership of the Nigerian Police Force at the Nigerian Police Resource Centre in Abuja. The event aimed to equip senior officers with the necessary skills and mindset to tackle the complex security challenges facing the nation.

A New Era of Criminal Activity

According to reports, the IGP's remarks came in response to a series of violent incidents involving security operatives. Over the past two weeks, at least 53 security personnel have been killed across the country. These casualties include soldiers, police officers, members of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), immigration and customs officers, vigilantes, and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF) as well as state community watch groups.

The IGP pointed out that the adversaries they face are not only persistent but also highly adaptive. He noted that criminal syndicates are constantly evolving their strategies to stay ahead of law enforcement efforts. "Criminal syndicates exploit technology to expand their reach. Terrorist networks rebrand and reorganize to avoid defeat," he stated.

The Role of Technology in Crime

The use of technology has become a significant factor in the operations of these criminal groups. Social media platforms and transnational alliances have enabled local conflicts to spread beyond borders, making it more challenging for security forces to contain the situation. Egbetokun stressed that this complexity requires more than just bravery from the leadership.

He emphasized the need for foresight, creativity, and agility in leadership. "This complexity demands more from us than courage alone. It demands foresight, creativity, and the agility to lead in an environment of constant flux," he said.

Preparing Leaders for the Future

The workshop, themed "Managing Fast-Paced Security Challenges in a Protracted Conflict Environment," was designed to prepare leaders to anticipate, adapt, and act decisively. Egbetokun urged the participants to combine patience with speed, endurance with imagination, and strategy with unshakable resolve.

"Leadership must be able to navigate through uncertainty and make informed decisions under pressure," he added. "Hesitation is costly, and speed is survival."

A Call to Action

Egbetokun’s message underscores the urgent need for a comprehensive approach to counter-terrorism and crime in Nigeria. As criminal activities become more technologically advanced, the police force must evolve its strategies and training methods to keep pace. The focus should not only be on immediate responses but also on long-term solutions that address the root causes of insecurity.

By fostering a culture of innovation and adaptability, the Nigerian Police Force can better protect its citizens and maintain national stability. The lessons learned from this workshop will play a crucial role in shaping the future of law enforcement in the country.
