Democrats Condemn Prosecution Misuse by People Power Party

Democratic Party of Korea Condemns Criticism of Minister Jo Won-Cheol

The Democratic Party of Korea has strongly responded to the People Power Party's criticism of Minister of Government Legislation Jo Won-cheol. In a statement released on the 25th, the party described the attacks on the minister as "audacious" and accused the opposition of "abusing prosecution’s indictment power."

Kim Hyun-jung, the Democratic Party’s floor spokesperson, addressed the issue in a commentary, highlighting what he sees as the People Power Party's attempt to deflect attention from the real issue at hand. He stated, “The People Power Party is nitpicking Minister Jo Won-cheol’s remarks, labeling him a ‘personal lawyer for the president’ and demanding his resignation. This is a cowardly attempt to obscure the truth by turning a blind eye to the root cause of all issues—the ‘prosecution’s abuse of indictment power’—while suppressing voices that point out its illegitimacy.”

The Core of the Controversy

Kim emphasized that the controversies surrounding the Yoon Suk-yeol administration began with the prosecution’s investigations, which he described as aimed at "eliminating political rivals." Over 700 days, there were a staggering 376 raids conducted to "shake down" the surroundings of one individual, ultimately resulting in an unprecedented "political indictment" of "5 trials and 12 charges." He called this "the very essence of constitutional violation."

He added, "Minister Jo’s mention of 'acquittal' pointed out that the 'indictment' itself was a 'political act' based on the abuse of prosecutorial power." According to Kim, the minister's comments were not only accurate but also necessary in highlighting the misuse of legal authority.

Mischaracterization of Constitutional Discussion

Kim criticized the People Power Party for mischaracterizing the discussion around the "trial constitutional appeal system." He noted that Minister Jo never used the term "fourth trial system," but instead discussed the necessity of the "trial constitutional appeal system" to relieve citizens suffering from unconstitutional laws.

He continued, "This is a constitutional discussion aimed at strengthening 'the guarantee of citizens’ basic rights.' Labeling his principled response—'the final decision on all constitutional matters lies with the sovereign people'—as 'rationalizing power extension' or 'denying constitutional spirit' is absurd."

Accusations of Political Strife

Kim further accused the People Power Party lawmakers of being trapped in a "presumption of guilt," arbitrarily condemning the same issue and pouring out blame. He questioned whether they were squandering taxpayers’ money on "political strife." He described their actions as "low-level incitement that distorts the essence of public duty."

Conclusion: Upholding Constitutional Order

In conclusion, Kim argued that Minister Jo’s remarks were a constitutional duty as a public official to point out the anti-constitutional abuse of prosecutorial power and restore constitutional order. He urged the People Power Party to immediately halt its distortion of the truth and political strife.

  • The Democratic Party of Korea insists that the focus should remain on addressing the systemic issues within the prosecution and ensuring that the rule of law is upheld.
  • The party calls for a more constructive dialogue that prioritizes the interests of the citizens over partisan politics.
  • It emphasizes the importance of protecting constitutional principles and maintaining the integrity of the judicial system.
