Driver Penalized for Stopping on Highway to Film TikTok Drone Video

A 34-year-old driver in southern Vietnam has been fined VND13 million (approximately US$493) for illegally stopping on the My Thuan–Can Tho Expressway to operate a drone and film a TikTok video. The incident occurred on October 2 when the man was driving a seven-seat vehicle along the expressway that connects Vinh Long and Dong Thap provinces.
During the incident, the driver parked his vehicle in the emergency lane in My Thuan Commune, Vinh Long. He then launched a drone to capture footage of the scenery, which he later posted online. The activity lasted about 10 minutes before he resumed his journey.
When questioned by the authorities, the driver claimed that he stopped because he found the view "beautiful" and stated that he was unaware of the traffic regulations he was violating. His actions not only put other road users at risk but also disrupted the flow of traffic on a major highway.
In addition to the fine, the driver lost six points from his license. Vietnam's point-based system allows drivers to start with 12 points, and if they lose all of them, they face a driving ban. Offenders must wait at least six months before retaking their driving test.
The My Thuan–Can Tho Expressway, which opened in late 2023, is a 23-kilometer, four-lane highway that passes through Vinh Long and Dong Thap. It has significantly reduced travel time between Ho Chi Minh City and Can Tho, cutting the journey from nearly four hours via National Highway 1A to just over two hours.
This incident highlights the growing challenges associated with the use of drones on public roads and the need for increased awareness of traffic laws. As social media platforms like TikTok continue to influence public behavior, incidents such as this underscore the importance of responsible and lawful conduct on the roads.
Key Points from the Incident:
- A 34-year-old driver was fined VND13 million for illegally stopping on the My Thuan–Can Tho Expressway.
- The driver used a drone to film a TikTok video while parked in the emergency lane.
- He claimed he was unaware of the traffic rules he was breaking.
- The driver had six points deducted from his license, which could lead to a driving ban if all points are lost.
- The expressway, opened in late 2023, has improved travel times between Ho Chi Minh City and Can Tho.
As technology continues to evolve, it is essential for drivers to remain informed about the rules and regulations governing road use. The use of drones, while popular for capturing content, must be done responsibly and within legal boundaries to ensure the safety of all road users.
