FG delivers 800 smart boards

Launch of Interactive Smart Boards in Nigerian Schools
The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, recently launched the distribution of over 800 Interactive Smart Boards to selected primary and secondary schools across Nigeria. The event took place at Queens College in Lagos, marking a significant step in the country's efforts to modernize its education system.
A Shift Toward Technology-Driven Learning
Alausa emphasized that this initiative is part of the government’s broader agenda to integrate technology into teaching and learning processes. He explained that the move from traditional chalkboards to smart boards represents a shift from one-directional learning methods to dynamic, interactive, and technology-enabled active learning. This transformation aims to make classrooms more engaging and effective for both students and teachers.
The minister highlighted that the smart boards will allow teachers to incorporate multimedia, digital textbooks, and real-time interaction into their lessons. Students will no longer just listen but will be able to touch, explore, and engage with the material, enhancing their comprehension and overall learning experience.
Preparing for the Digital Economy
Alausa stated that the initiative is not only about upgrading classroom technology but also about preparing Nigeria’s youth for the demands of the digital economy. He mentioned that the government is embedding artificial intelligence (AI), EdTech, and digital literacy across curricula to equip students with skills in STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine), data analysis, and coding.
He added, “Education must evolve with the world of work, innovation, and national competitiveness.” This vision aligns with the Universal Basic Education Commission’s digital learning roadmap and national education strategy.
Expanding Access to Quality Education
The initiative ensures that learners and teachers in public schools across the country will benefit from the new technology. Alausa assured that all teachers will receive training on how to use the interactive smart boards effectively for lesson delivery.
He also emphasized that the program is a bold declaration of Nigeria’s readiness to embrace the future of learning. “Our goal is to ensure that every child, regardless of background or location, has access to quality, modern, technology-enabled education,” he said.
Expanding Digital Infrastructure
In line with the digitalization of education, Alausa outlined plans to expand digital infrastructure across all states. This includes scaling up teacher digital literacy and AI training, deepening the integration of STEMM and coding in curricula, and ensuring that data and innovation drive policy decisions.
The minister also spoke about partnerships between the Universal Basic Education Commission and State Universal Education Boards, which have led to the distribution of over 1,000 Interactive Smart Boards nationwide, along with teacher training programs.
Additional Support for Inclusive Education
The collaboration has also facilitated the provision of 140 talking computers for learners with visual impairments and the supply of 250 desktop computers for Second-Chance Schools. These initiatives aim to support ICT-enabled learning for out-of-school children.
Furthermore, over 4 million core textbooks and 419,000 library resource materials have been distributed to boost early-grade literacy and numeracy. The Digital Resource Centre in Abuja has also been upgraded as a national hub for teacher training, content development, and data management.
Benefiting Schools in Lagos
The initial rollout of smart boards includes several schools in Lagos, such as St. Joseph Primary School in Ibowon, Epe; Queens College in Yaba; Adeniyi Jones Primary School in Ikeja; Victoria Island Primary School in Eti-Osa; Anglican Primary School in Ishawo, Ikorodu; and All Saints Anglican Primary School in Yaba.
This initiative marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s educational journey, setting the stage for a more inclusive, innovative, and technologically advanced learning environment.
