Gen Z Shuns Classic Phone Calls for Loud Speakerphone Chats

The Evolution of Phone Calling: A New Era in Communication

The traditional way of holding a phone to your ear while making a call is slowly becoming a thing of the past, according to recent research. This shift in behavior is particularly evident among younger generations, especially Gen Z in the UK. A growing number of people are adopting alternative methods that reflect modern lifestyles and technological advancements.

Changing Habits Among Younger Generations

A new study by Talkmobile reveals that almost half of Gen Z Brits never use the conventional method of holding their phone to their ear. Instead, they opt for more hands-free approaches. Over a third of them choose to shout into their mobile phones while using the loudspeaker or walk-and-talk using earbuds. These trends have even been given names—Proudhailers and Walkie-Squawkies—highlighting the evolving ways in which people interact through their devices.

Talkmobile, a company that has won nine customer care awards in the last two years, is dedicated to understanding how Brits use their mobile phones. Their latest research involved surveying over 2,000 UK adults on how they hold their phones during calls. The findings show that younger individuals are less likely to follow the original design intended by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876.

Generational Differences in Phone Usage

The data shows significant differences across generations. Around 55% of 18- to 28-year-olds still use the classic call style, while 63% of Millennials (aged 29 to 43) and 73% of Gen X (aged 44 to 59) do the same. In contrast, 85% of Boomers (aged 60 to 78) prefer the traditional method.

Gen Z is most likely to hold their phones in their palm while speaking into the microphone, a style known as the Proudhailer. This approach was popularized by contestants on the BBC show The Apprentice with Lord Sugar. Nearly 18% of Gen Z individuals use this method as their main style, compared to 14% of Millennials and just 9% of Gen X.

Interestingly, the older Baby Boomer generation is also seen using the Proudhailer style, though at a much lower rate—around 10% of them prefer it.

Rise of Hands-Free Communication

Another trend gaining popularity is the Walkie-Squawkie method, where users rely on headphones for hands-free conversations. This method is more common among younger generations, with 17% of Gen Z using it, compared to only 2% of Boomers.

Facetime has also become a primary method of communication for some. One in 10 Gen Z users relies on Facetime, but this number decreases steadily with age, with very few Boomers using it as their main form of calling.

Talkmobile's Commitment to Customer Satisfaction

Talkmobile’s research is part of its broader mission to provide customers with straightforward mobile services that offer great prices and coverage. The company, known for offering some of the best SIM-only deals in the UK, holds an industry-leading Trustpilot score of 4.7 based on customer ratings.

Stuart Wilson, a spokesperson for Talkmobile, commented on the changing nature of phone calls: “The way we make a phone call is changing with every generation. Who knows how we'll be speaking to our loved ones in 50 years? In a world of chatbots and instant messaging, our research shows that conversation is still at the heart of communication—however you choose to hold your phone.”

Talkmobile remains committed to supporting its customers, no matter how they choose to use their mobile devices. Whether through traditional methods or modern alternatives, the company aims to provide reliable service that meets the needs of all users.

Future of Communication

As technology continues to evolve, so too will the ways in which people communicate. While the traditional phone call may be fading, it is clear that the essence of conversation remains central to human interaction. With each new generation, the methods of communication adapt, reflecting changes in lifestyle, technology, and social behavior.
