Interlune CEO: Space Exploration Is the Ultimate Challenge

Vision for Space Exploration and Collaboration
Rob Meyerson, the CEO of Interlune, shared his thoughts on the future of space exploration during an interview. He emphasized that to unlock the vast potential the universe offers, it is crucial to have more entrepreneurs who possess exceptional abilities and unwavering determination. Meyerson also highlighted that Interlune is always open to working with Korean companies and other global partners.
Meyerson’s journey in the aerospace industry began with a degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Michigan. His early career included roles as an engineer at NASA and private space companies before he became the first CEO of Blue Origin, the space company founded by Jeff Bezos. Under his leadership, Blue Origin experienced remarkable growth over 15 years. He was instrumental in developing the reusable suborbital launch vehicle “New Shepard” and overseeing the design of Blue Origin’s first large reusable launch vehicle, “New Glenn.”
In 2020, Meyerson co-founded Interlune, a company focused on space natural resource mining. Alongside former Blue Origin executives and Harrison Schmitt, a 90-year-old astronaut who flew on Apollo 17, Meyerson launched this ambitious venture. Schmitt, who has been involved in research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison since 1986, was one of the first to recognize the potential of using Helium-3 for nuclear fusion. Meyerson recruited Schmitt as a scientific advisor for Blue Origin, and the two developed a strong professional relationship that eventually led them to start Interlune together.
Investor Confidence and Market Potential
When discussing how investors view Interlune, Meyerson noted that they are funding the company because they see the growing demand for space resources like Helium-3. He explained that while the challenges involved in space resource mining are significant, investors understand that what Interlune is doing is groundbreaking and essential for the future of space exploration.
Meyerson acknowledged that while there are few companies similar to Interlune, many space companies are working towards building a lunar economy across various fields. He encouraged aspiring entrepreneurs, particularly those in Korea, to consider entering the space industry. According to him, there is no challenge more exciting or rewarding than exploring space and advancing technology.
The Future of Space Resource Mining
Interlune's mission is not just about mining resources; it is about creating a sustainable future for humanity beyond Earth. The company is focused on developing technologies that can extract and utilize resources found in space, such as water ice and rare minerals. These resources could support long-term space missions and even enable the establishment of human settlements on the Moon and Mars.
Meyerson believes that the key to success in this field lies in collaboration. He has consistently expressed openness to working with international partners, including companies from South Korea. This approach reflects a broader vision where space exploration is a collective effort, driven by innovation, shared knowledge, and mutual goals.
As the space industry continues to evolve, companies like Interlune are paving the way for a new era of exploration. With the right combination of vision, technology, and collaboration, the possibilities for humanity in space are truly limitless.
