System Checks Begin as Korea Post Aims to Resume Operations

Korea Post has initiated system checks to restore normal operations following a fire that disrupted postal and financial services at the Daejeon National Information Resources Service (NIRS) data center. The incident occurred on the afternoon of the 26th of last month, leading to significant operational challenges for the company.

A representative from Korea Post stated on the 28th that testing has begun to ensure all services, including postal and financial operations, are functioning correctly. They explained that while the financial servers were not physically damaged by the fire, they are located on the second floor, whereas the fire took place on the fifth floor. As a result, services can be resumed once normal operations are confirmed. However, all financial services, such as deposits, withdrawals, transfers, ATM usage, and insurance premium payments and disbursements, were temporarily suspended as a precautionary measure.

Impact on Postal and Parcel Services

Regarding postal and parcel services, Korea Post noted that deliveries are experiencing delays compared to usual but are still possible through postal workers. The source clarified that the 28th is a holiday, so postal services are not operational on that day. They added that all items requiring delivery by the 27th were successfully delivered.

If the servers responsible for postal services are not restored by the 28th, partial delays in mail and parcel deliveries may occur starting on the 29th. This is due to the disruption of the system that automatically optimizes delivery routes for registered mail and letters. It is known that postal offices have prepared emergency measures to handle tasks manually.

The source mentioned that if the system is not restored by the 29th, customers at post office counters will be informed that deliveries of fresh food items may be delayed. They emphasized that efforts are being made to restore the system as quickly as possible.

Ongoing Efforts and Customer Communication

Korea Post has been working diligently to address the disruptions caused by the fire. The company is focused on ensuring that all systems are back to full functionality to minimize further inconvenience to customers. This includes ongoing communication with customers about potential delays and the steps being taken to resolve the issue.

In addition to the technical efforts, the company is also preparing to inform customers about any changes in service availability. This proactive approach aims to keep the public well-informed and reduce uncertainty during this period of recovery.

Future Steps and Recovery Plan

As part of its recovery plan, Korea Post is monitoring the status of the affected systems closely. The goal is to restore full functionality as soon as possible, with a focus on critical services such as financial transactions and postal deliveries. The company has also established a dedicated team to manage the restoration process and coordinate with relevant stakeholders.

The situation highlights the importance of having backup systems and contingency plans in place to mitigate the impact of unexpected events. Korea Post is using this experience to review and strengthen its disaster recovery protocols to better handle future incidents.

Overall, the company remains committed to providing reliable services to its customers and is working tirelessly to overcome the challenges posed by the recent fire. Through continuous system checks and customer communication, Korea Post aims to restore normal operations and ensure the continued satisfaction of its users.
