Lionel Richie Reveals Jackson's Unkempt Underwear and Style Choices

The Unconventional Friendship of Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson

Lionel Richie, a legendary figure in the music industry, has recently shared new insights into his friendship with the late Michael Jackson. In his memoir Truly, Richie offers an intimate look at their close creative bond and reveals some of the unique habits that defined Jackson's personal life.

Michael Jackson passed away on June 25, 2009, in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 50. His death was attributed to an overdose of the anaesthetic propofol along with other prescription drugs. This tragic event marked the end of a career that redefined the global music scene.

In a revealing interview, Richie discusses how Jackson's fame often influenced his daily routines. According to Richie, Jackson would go days without changing his clothes, which led to the nickname “Smelly” from producer Quincy Jones. “Michael would laugh too, realising that he hadn’t changed or washed his clothes for a couple of days,” Richie told PEOPLE. “We all have our quirks.”

Richie explained that Jackson’s hygiene challenges were partly due to his relentless schedule. Constantly on the road, performing and recording, he rarely had time for ordinary routines. “He was always in his stage costumes, pyjama bottoms, or something loose so he could dance or play with his animals,” Richie wrote in Truly.

The pop star's habits extended beyond just shirts and jeans. Richie noted that Jackson would sometimes wear his pants and underwear until they were unwearable. “He just got into the habit of wearing the same clothes until they were falling apart,” he revealed. He also mentioned that Jackson’s outfits often disappeared because fans and staff kept them as souvenirs.

Despite these peculiarities, Richie’s memoir highlights the warmth and depth of their friendship. The two collaborated on the iconic charity anthem “We Are the World” in 1985, spending countless hours together in studios and rehearsals. Richie recalls moments of laughter and fondness, such as the day Jackson visited his home, unkempt as usual, prompting Richie to hand him fresh jeans and underwear and tell him to take a shower.

“I drove him home, and when I came back, there on the carpet were his old jeans and underwear, just lying there like roadkill,” Richie wrote. “What do I do but laugh? MJ was here.”

Beyond the humor, Richie reflects on Jackson’s genius and gentle spirit. “In the studio, he could distinguish 15 different mixes of a song,” he said. “But in daily life, that kid was just winging it every minute.”
