Maryam Nawaz Backs Major Autism School Reforms in Punjab

A New Era in Special Education

In a significant move towards inclusive education, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif recently chaired a pivotal meeting focused on special education. During the session, she was informed about the establishment of the Maryam Nawaz Autism School for Special Children, a groundbreaking initiative that has already seen over 5,000 admissions within a short period. This achievement marks a historic milestone for the province, showcasing its commitment to providing quality education and support for children with special needs.

The Chief Minister expressed her pride in this accomplishment and commended Special Assistant Sania Ashiq and her team for their exceptional efforts in advancing inclusive education. Her recognition highlights the importance of collaboration and dedication in creating an environment where every child can thrive.

Key Initiatives Approved

During the meeting, several key initiatives were approved to enhance the educational experience for special children. One of the most notable decisions was the allocation of 48 new buses for special education centers across Punjab. This move aims to ensure that children from all corners of the province have access to these vital resources.

Additionally, it was decided that underprivileged children would receive free therapy and education at the Autism School. To maintain world-class care and teaching standards, the government plans to hire top autism experts from around the globe. This strategic approach ensures that students receive the best possible support and guidance.

Other important decisions included the approval of uniforms for students, teachers, and staff, as well as the formation of a 13-member Board of Governors and a three-year strategic plan for the Autism Resource Center. These steps are essential in building a sustainable and effective framework for special education in Punjab.

Innovative Educational Model

Special Assistant Sania Ashiq provided a detailed briefing during the meeting, explaining that a customized autism education model—successfully practiced in leading countries—is being implemented at the school. The curriculum includes communication skills, moral education, life skills, technology, physical education, and sociology, all integrated into a functional green learning approach.

Facilities such as a sensory garden, open gym, sound therapy rooms, and a walking track are also part of the school's development plan. These features are designed to enhance sensory and physical engagement among students, promoting a holistic learning environment.

Comprehensive Support for Students

The Maryam Nawaz Autism School and Research Center will admit children aged between 3 and 16, with continued education and therapy support until the age of 22. A hybrid model offering visual and written therapy in both Urdu and English has been introduced to make learning more effective. This approach ensures that students can access materials in their preferred language, enhancing their understanding and engagement.

Moreover, coaching modules for parents have been designed to strengthen coordination between home and school. This initiative ensures that children receive consistent support in their development journey, fostering a collaborative environment between families and educators.

Ensuring Safety and Professional Development

To maintain high standards of safety and professional training, CCTV cameras will be installed across the school premises, and Child Welfare Officers will monitor student well-being. These measures are crucial in creating a secure and supportive environment for all students.

A dedicated Research and Teacher Training Division will also be established, offering diploma and certificate programs for educators. This division will train master trainers to equip teachers with modern techniques and ensure sustained improvement in autism education. The focus on professional development underscores the government's commitment to excellence in teaching and learning.

Conclusion

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz concluded the meeting by commending her team's vision and reaffirming her government's commitment to creating a more inclusive and compassionate Punjab. The initiatives approved during the meeting reflect a deep understanding of the challenges faced by children with special needs and a determination to provide them with the tools and support they need to succeed. This comprehensive approach to special education is a testament to the province's dedication to fostering a society where every child can reach their full potential.
