McDonald's Fans Furious Over Monopoly Promotion: 'Price Hikes Not Worth It'

McDonald’s Monopoly Returns with New Features and Challenges

McDonald’s Monopoly game is back in the US, starting October 6. This year's campaign promises a range of prizes, including free food items and a $1 million jackpot. However, many customers are skeptical about whether the excitement of winning can offset the rising costs of meals.

Over 30 menu items are eligible for this year’s game, including the Big Mac, which has become a symbol of increasing burger prices. The price hikes have led to frustration among fans, who feel that the game no longer offers the same value it once did.

One customer on Reddit expressed their disappointment, saying, “Wake me up when they bring back the 29 cent hamburgers and 39 cent cheeseburgers.” Another user commented, “Maybe if they brought back affordable prices. Now I just look at it as a cash grab, obtained by pulling our heart strings about when the world actually made sense.”

The game also faces scrutiny due to the McMillions scandal, where a man stole over $24 million in cash and prizes between 1989 and 2001. This event inspired a six-part documentary that left some customers permanently disillusioned with the Monopoly game.

In response to criticism about pricing, McDonald’s introduced cut-price deals last year to attract loyal customers back. Earlier this month, the chain announced a price promise on its combo meals, keeping them 15 percent cheaper than if purchased separately. Last year, Big Mac meals reached $18, but the company countered this with a $5 four-item meal deal launched last summer.

Joe Erlinger, head of McDonald’s US business, stated, “Customers are telling us they need more of the everyday value and affordability that defines the McDonald's brand.”

McDonald’s also launched a limited-edition Gold Sauce on September 3, inspired by South Carolina BBQ. Some customers called it a "Chick-fil-A knockoff," while others appreciated the flavor. The sauce comes with new menu items such as the Gold Snack Wrap, Bacon Gold McCrispy, and Bacon Gold Deluxe McCrispy.

This rollout is part of a broader effort to recover from declining sales. While McDonald’s profits fell 3.6 percent in the first quarter, sales have since rebounded.

For the first time, the Monopoly game will include both physical peel-off stickers and app-based digital stickers. However, all winnings must be redeemed through the McDonald’s app. Players can "peel" the stickers to win instant prizes or collect game pieces to unlock bigger rewards.

Instant food prizes are awarded immediately upon peeling, such as "free Big Mac." To win grand prizes like one million American Airlines AAdvantage miles or a $10,000 Lowe's shopping spree, players must collect two, three, or four pieces of the same color.

Physical stickers must be peeled from packaging and then scanned in the McDonald’s app. Fans who sign up for the app between now and October 5 will receive 500 Rewards points.
