Nigeria Police Uncover Leads in Murder Case of Arise News Anchor
The Nigeria Police Force has made significant progress in its investigation into the murder of Somtochukwu Maduagwu, an anchor with Arise News. According to recent updates, investigators have identified credible leads regarding the gun suppliers who armed the suspects allegedly responsible for the crime.
The Federal Capital Territory Police Command had previously announced the arrest of 12 individuals in connection with a robbery and murder that took place on September 29, 2025, at Unique Apartments in Katampe Extension, Abuja. During this incident, Maduagwu and a security guard, Barnabas Danlami, were killed.
According to the police, the gang involved in the attack sourced their weapons from a supplier based in the Niger Republic. The arrested individuals include:
- Shamsudeen Hassan
- Hassan Isah (22)
- Abubakar Alkamu (27)
- Sani Sirajo (20)
- Mashkur Jamilu (28)
- Suleiman Badamasi (21)
- Abdulsalam Saleh
- Zaharadeen Muhammad (23)
- Musa Adamu (30)
- Sumayya Mohammed (27)
- Isah Abdulrahman (25)
- Musa Umar (31)
During a press update on Saturday, Force spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin provided details about the ongoing investigation. He stated that while some of the gunrunners linked to the gang have been located, the police are still working to apprehend them.
“We are yet to arrest a suspect in that regard, but we have very credible leads we are working on. We already know the location of some of the gunrunners and suppliers, and we assure Nigerians that in our subsequent updates, we will be able to tell you how far we have come,” Hundeyin said.
The police recovered several items from the suspects, including:
- One locally fabricated AK-47 rifle
- A pump-action rifle
- A locally made pistol
- 36 rounds of 9mm ammunition
- Two live cartridges
- Four mobile phones
- Two knives
- One cutlass
- Two flashlights
Hundeyin also mentioned that nine suspects were currently in custody, while three others were receiving medical treatment for gunshot injuries sustained during their arrest.
Public Interest Drives Suspect Parade
One notable development was the decision by the police to parade nine of the suspects in Abuja. This move deviated from the standard policy against parading suspects, but Hundeyin explained that it was done due to the high public interest in the case.
“In case you are wondering why we are parading these suspects, despite our standard policy on not parading suspects, it is because this is actually a public interest story. We would like Nigerians to see that the Nigeria Police Force delivered on its promise to get these suspects arrested,” he said.
Hundeyin emphasized that the suspects would face prosecution once the investigation was complete.
“It doesn’t stop there. These suspects will definitely be prosecuted as soon as we wrap up our investigation. Justice must be served. Mr. Somtochukwu and Mr. Danlami must get justice this time,” he added.
Commitment to Public Safety
Under the leadership of Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, the Nigeria Police Force has pledged to continue deploying all available resources to ensure the safety of citizens. Hundeyin urged the public to remain vigilant and provide timely and credible information to support law enforcement efforts.
