Oligarch's Unoccupied Mansions in Brighton's Hollywood Hills

The Enigma of Withdean Woods: A Wealthy Neighborhood in Disrepair

Withdean Woods in Brighton has been hailed as the best place to live in England, a title that may not be surprising given its breathtaking views of the South Downs. However, this picturesque neighborhood is facing an unusual dilemma—three abandoned mansions owned by a Russian oligarch are tarnishing the area’s reputation.

The properties, purchased by Sergey Fedotov and his wife Kira Fedotovato, have remained empty for nearly a decade. Despite their initial investment of millions into renovations, including building a summer house, a swimming pool, and marble fittings, the homes have fallen into disrepair. Locals have expressed frustration over the neglect, claiming that the once-imposing structures have become a haven for teenage parties and vandalism.

Residents told the Daily Mail that the derelict homes have turned into a "derelict playground" for young people, leading to frequent incidents of graffiti and noise. The situation has left the community feeling uneasy, especially at night when the eerie silence of the neighborhood becomes more pronounced.

A Mysterious Turn of Events

Interestingly, three months ago, a cleaner named Rachel Bates received a call from Ms. Fedotovato asking her to look after one of the abandoned homes. According to Ms. Bates, the house she was assigned to clean had been tidied up and was being used as a short-term rental. She explained that she communicates with the owner via WhatsApp and is paid well for her services. However, the presence of metal bars meant to protect the property suggests that the home is still considered vacant.

Ms. Bates also mentioned that the area has faced issues with school children breaking in, defacing walls, and hosting parties. This has added to the residents’ concerns about safety and property damage.

A Ghost Town in the Midst of Wealth

Jasmine Dyas, a local postwoman, described the area as feeling more like a ghost town than a thriving suburb. She noted that despite being one of the richest neighborhoods in Brighton, she rarely sees anyone. “I deliver parcels most days and I've never seen people,” she said. Dyas speculated that the houses are bought by wealthy individuals who do not reside there, contributing to the sense of emptiness.

The Data Behind the Title

According to data analysis by the Daily Mail, Withdean Woods was ranked as the best neighborhood out of almost 7,000 in England. It scored 85.2 out of 100 based on eight metrics, including transport links, deprivation, air quality, income, and access to green spaces. The area falls within a desirable 'wedge' that stretches through the southeast, encompassing parts of Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Hampshire, Surrey, and Sussex.

Resident Russell Church, who has lived in the area for years, was unsurprised by the ranking. He described the neighborhood as quiet with great views and no crime. “I don’t take any notice of what’s going on elsewhere,” he said. Church referred to the area as the "Hollywood hills of Brighton," highlighting its scenic beauty and tranquility.

The Paradox of Affluence

Despite the challenges posed by the abandoned properties, Withdean Woods continues to attract attention for its high quality of life. Residents enjoy a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural vibrancy, and relative affordability compared to other parts of the UK. The area's appeal is further enhanced by its proximity to green spaces and excellent transport links.

However, the presence of these neglected mansions raises questions about the broader implications of wealth and property ownership. As the neighborhood continues to thrive, the contrast between its affluent image and the reality of abandoned homes remains a topic of discussion among locals and visitors alike.
