Oyo's Sports Economy Unveiled - Makinde

Governor Seyi Makinde Highlights Oyo State’s Sports Development at NFF Assembly

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, recently emphasized the state's progress in developing a robust sports economy during the 81st Annual General Assembly of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) held in Ibadan. The event took place at the Theophilus Ogunlesi Hall, University College Hospital, Ibadan, and was declared open by the governor.

Makinde highlighted that over the past six years, his administration has implemented various policies and programs aimed at boosting the state's sports sector. He reiterated his commitment to furthering sports development and ensuring that Oyo State is equipped to host major sporting events.

The assembly coincided with the U-20 Women Qualifiers Match between Nigeria and Rwanda, which was held at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex in Adamasingba, Ibadan. This venue, which was remodeled under the Makinde-led administration, showcased the state's growing capacity to host international-level matches.

Governor Makinde expressed gratitude for the support from the NFF and other sports organizations, stating that such backing has allowed the state to focus on rebuilding sports infrastructure and creating structures that attract both national and international sporting activities. He also pointed out that Ibadan now has the necessary facilities to host significant events, including matches involving the Super Eagles.

In his address, the governor urged the NFF to conduct a thorough inspection of the state's sporting facilities. He assured that his government would allocate the necessary resources to ensure these facilities meet the required standards for hosting major events.

He said: “On behalf of the government and the people of Oyo State, I really want to thank the NFF president and your executive committee members for your interest in Oyo State. Yes, we are trying to develop a sports economy here, but if you don’t have the support or you don’t have the pressure from people like yourselves, some of our efforts will just go in vain.”

Makinde also praised the NFF for its reforms, which have contributed to making the Nigeria Premier Football League fairer. However, he noted that there is still a need for more funding to elevate the profile of football in the country. He encouraged the federation to attract big businesses to support their initiatives, as many Nigerians currently follow foreign leagues.

The governor wished the NFF success in its upcoming elective congress, highlighting the smooth transitions in the federation's leadership. He reiterated his call for a five-year single term for the NFF president, suggesting that such a structure could benefit the organization.

NFF President Acknowledges Governor Makinde’s Contributions

The NFF President, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, commended Governor Makinde for his contributions to football and sports in Oyo State. He specifically acknowledged the governor's support for the Shooting Stars Sporting Club (3SC) and the remodeling of the Lekan Salami Sports Complex.

Gusau expressed confidence that residents of Oyo State would soon witness the Super Eagles playing in Ibadan. He emphasized that the successful hosting of the NFF Assembly and the FIFA Women U20 Qualifiers in Ibadan was made possible due to the governor's support and favorable environment.

He recalled how, just a month prior, he had requested the governor to allow the NFF to hold the assembly and host the match in Ibadan. The governor's approval was instrumental in making this event possible.

Gusau also noted that Oyo State has a rich football history, and Governor Makinde's passion for the sport has driven his efforts to revive it. He mentioned that the governor has consistently pushed for the Super Eagles to play in Ibadan, emphasizing that it is the home of the team.

Call for Continued Support and Optimism

Former NFF President, Amaju Pinnick, also spoke at the event, urging continued support for the federation and expressing optimism about the Super Eagles' chances of qualifying for the next World Cup.

The governor was accompanied by several key officials, including the Head of Service, Mrs Olubunmi Oni; Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Alhaja Wasilat Adegoke; Commissioner for Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Mr Williams Akin-Funmilayo; Commissioner for Special Duties, Alhaja Faosat Sanni; and Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, CP Fatai Owoseni (Rtd).
