Porsche Secures IMSA Titles as Cadillac Claims Dramatic Petit Le Mans Victory

Action Express Cadillac Secures Second Consecutive Petit Le Mans Victory

The IMSA’s four classes delivered an electrifying performance, with standout results across all categories following a fiercely competitive race. The Action Express Racing team, piloted by Jack Aitken, Earl Bamber, and Frederik Vesti, claimed the victory for the Cadillac V-Series.R LMDh in the 10-hour endurance event at Road Atlanta. Their win marked a second consecutive triumph for the brand in the Petit Le Mans.

The #31 Action Express Racing Cadillac V-Series.R LMDh crossed the finish line with a 5.1-second lead over the #23 The Heart of Racing Aston Martin Valkyrie Le Mans Hypercar, driven by Ross Gunn, Roman De Angelis, and Alex Riberas. This margin was enough to secure the top position in the race, highlighting the dominance of the Cadillac throughout the event.

In a closely contested battle for the IMSA SportsCar Championship drivers’ title, Matt Campbell and Mathieu Jaminet, sharing the #6 Porsche Penske Motorsport 963 LMDh with Laurens Vanthoor, secured third place. This result was sufficient to clinch the championship for the Porsche squad. Additionally, Porsche achieved a clean sweep in the GTP class, taking home the manufacturers’ and teams’ titles, as well as the IMSA Endurance Cup, thanks to Nick Tandy and Felipe Nasr in the sister #7 PPM car.

The Action Express Cadillac was the fastest vehicle for most of the 10-hour race, but it had to overcome an early setback to retain the Petit Le Mans crown, which the Chip Ganassi Racing team won in 2024. Aitken, who qualified second, took the lead after shadowing pole winner Tom Blomqvist in the #60 Meyer Shank Racing Acura ARX-06 LMDh for the first two and a half hours. The British driver extended his lead to nearly 10 seconds before handing the car over to Bamber just before the fifth safety car of the race.

Bamber faced challenges when he encountered a right rear puncture under yellow flags after running over debris on his outlap. He managed to return to second place behind the #6 PPM car, where Vanthoor was drafted in after Julien Andlauer fell ill. The Action Express entry then overtook the Porsche during the final safety car with four hours remaining in the race.

Vesti built a significant advantage over Dries Vanthoor in the #24 Rahal BMW M Hybrid V8 LMDh, which also moved ahead of the Shank Acura. The Porsche re-entered contention when Campbell passed the BMW and closed to within a second of Bamber in the penultimate hour. However, after the final round of pit stops with just over an hour to go, the Caddy driver was able to reclaim the lead over the Porsche, now driven by Jaminet.

All cars made a final splash-and-dash fuel stop in the last hour, with the THOR team opting to make its extra pit call early. This strategy allowed De Angelis to move into third place behind the Cadillac and the factory Lamborghini SC63 LMDh, driven by Romain Grosjean. When the Caddy and Porsche stopped, the Lamborghini dropped to fourth place. Grosjean, who shared the Lambo with Edoardo Mortara and Daniil Kvyat, made his splash with five minutes to go, securing fourth place for the car, which marks its final scheduled appearance.

The best-performing Acura finished fifth with Blomqvist, Colin Braun, and Scott Dixon. The #10 Wayne Taylor Racing Cadillac, driven by Ricky Taylor, Filipe Albuquerque, and Will Stevens, completed the top six.

LMP2 and GTD Pro Results

In the LMP2 category, the #11 TDS Racing ORECA-Gibson 07, driven by Steven Thomas, Mikkel Jensen, and Hunter McElrea, claimed victory. PJ Hyett and Dane Cameron secured the class title in their AO Racing ORECA.

BMW dominated the GTD Pro category with the Paul Miller Racing M4 GT3 EVO, driven by Dan Harper, Max Hesse, and Neil Verhagen. The two Corvette Racing/Pratt & Miller Corvette Z06 GT3.Rs followed, with Nicky Catsburg, Tommy Milner, and Nico Varrone finishing second. However, the title went to Alexander Sims and Antonio Garcia, who earned third place alongside Daniel Juncadella.
