PP Leader Calls for Jo Won-Cheol's Resignation, Demands Kim Hyun-Ji's Testimony

Jang Dong-hyeok, the leader of the People Power Party, made strong statements on the 25th, accusing Lee Jae-myung of committing injustice by overturning judicial justice for a single person and attempting to destroy the entire judiciary. He added that this situation is threatening the entire Republic of Korea. The day before, during an audit session by the Ministry of Government Legislation, Jang demanded that Jo Won-cheol, the Minister of Government Legislation, who was seen as acting like Lee’s attorney, to resign. He also told Kim Hyun-ji, the First Deputy Director of the Presidential Office, to "immediately come to the National Assembly and answer the allegations."

At a press briefing held at the National Assembly, Jang claimed that President Lee Jae-myung has embedded 14 individuals with legal backgrounds—his former attorneys—into key positions across the administration. These include:

  • Lee Tae-hyeong, Senior Secretary for Civil Affairs at the Presidential Office
  • Jeon Chi-young, Senior Secretary for Public Ethics
  • Lee Jang-young, Senior Secretary for Legal Affairs
  • Lee Chan-jin, head of the Financial Supervisory Service
  • Jo Won-cheol, Minister of Government Legislation
  • Kim Hee-soo, Director-General of the National Intelligence Service’s Planning and Coordination Bureau
  • Cho Sang-ho, policy advisor to the Minister of Justice
  • Cha Ji-hoon, Ambassador to the United Nations
  • Lee Dae-hoon, member of the Political and Administrative Subcommittee of the State Affairs Planning Committee
  • Democratic Party lawmakers Park Gyun-taek, Lee Geon-tae, Kim Ki-pyo, Kim Dong-ah, and Yang Bu-nam

Jang criticized Jo Won-cheol, the Minister of Government Legislation, for not serving as Korea’s Minister of Government Legislation but instead continuing to act as President Lee Jae-myung’s personal attorney. He added that the head of a national agency overseeing government legislation has shifted blame for all five trials and 12 charges against President Lee to the prosecution and Supreme Court, claiming them all innocent. Jang remarked that the National Assembly Legislation and Judiciary Committee audit session resembled President Lee’s courtroom and stated that the Minister’s unconditional support for the President, despite the ongoing trial and no verdict yet, is a classic case of conflict of interest.

Regarding a question about whether President Lee could serve consecutive terms under a constitutional amendment for a four-year term system, Jang said that Minister Jo provided a remarkably absurd answer. He explained that Jo argued that while the Constitution prohibits consecutive terms, it ultimately depends on the people’s decision—a nonsensical argument. This essentially means leaving it to Lee’s ardent young female supporters, nicknamed “Gaeddal” (‘daughters of reform’). Even Democratic Party member Choo Mi-ae, chair of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, intervened, stating that there is no need to leave room for ambiguous interpretations and create new controversies.

Jang condemned that this is the President and his Minister of Government Legislation invoking the superiority of elected power, adding that no wonder terms like “code appointments,” “favor-return appointments,” and “shield appointments” are emerging. He asserted that appointments for a single individual are undermining all legal order in Korea and demanded that Jo Won-cheol, the “Innocence Chief” who has reduced the Ministry of Government Legislation to a regime defense and law-distortion office, must resign immediately.

Regarding Kim Hyun-ji, a close aide to President Lee, Jang described her as “the unofficial supreme power of the Lee Jae-myung administration, Dignity Hyun-ji, whose authority is immense.” He noted that the government audit will conclude next week and said that Kim Hyun-ji’s bulletproof wall was truly high and thick. The People Power Party insisted on Kim’s attendance as a witness, but the Democratic Party rejected it.

Jang stated that Kim Hyun-ji is at the core of all allegations against President Lee. Referencing a video from 20 years ago showing a physical altercation at the Seongnam City Council, he said that Kim has long been President Lee’s vanguard. He revealed that circumstantial evidence shows Kim effectively commanded the legal team of former Vice Governor Lee Hwa-young, received reports on statements related to the President, and even intervened in forcing attorneys to resign. He added that an audio recording of her managing election funds in her capacity as a public official has also been made public.

Jang highlighted that a poll found that over 6 out of 10 citizens, regardless of party or ideology, believe Kim’s audit attendance is necessary, and declared that this is the voice of the people. He condemned that Kim’s existence, hidden in a secret forest beyond legal control, symbolizes the Lee Jae-myung administration’s destruction of the rule of law and tyranny, urging that Kim must immediately come to the National Assembly, the hall of public will, and answer all allegations.

On the three special counsels (insurrection, Kim Keon-hee, and Marine Corps member), Jang stated that Lee Myung-hyun, the Marine Corps special counsel, saw arrest warrants for five key figures rejected—his blade is broken. He claimed that the Democratic Party’s insistence on investigative pressure has been exposed as a fabrication through the judiciary. He added that the rejection of arrest warrants for former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo and former Justice Minister Park Sung-jae has ended Cho Eun-seok’s (insurrection special counsel) political lifespan—an anticipated downfall. He criticized Min Joong-ki, the special counsel investigating former First Lady Kim Keon-hee, for ignoring the tears of 7,000 small investors and driving the unjust death of a Yangpyeong public official, leading to self-destruction. Regarding the Democratic Party’s push for a “distortion of law crime,” he warned that the three special counsels will be the first to face arrest investigations.
