Vice-President Kashim Shettima has arrived in New York, USA, to participate in the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), which will take place from September 22 to September 28, 2025. Representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Vice President is set to deliver Nigeria’s national statement at the global event and engage in various high-level discussions.
This year’s UNGA session is a critical opportunity for Nigeria to showcase its commitment to multilateralism and global cooperation. The Foreign Affairs Minister, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, emphasized Nigeria’s dedication to effective multilateralism and strengthened partnerships. He also highlighted the importance of Nigeria’s advocacy for the United Nations Global Convention on Taxation, a key initiative aimed at reforming the global financial architecture.
Key Initiatives and Agendas
During his visit, Vice-President Shettima will announce Nigeria’s new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement, reflecting the country’s commitment to climate action. He will also attend the high-level roundtable of the Global Champions on Adequate and Affordable Housing and engage in several bilateral meetings with international partners.
The Vice President was welcomed by a delegation that included the Foreign Affairs Minister, the Minister of Defence, the Charge d’Affaires at the Permanent Mission of Nigeria to the United Nations, and other senior officials. This underscores the importance of the UNGA for Nigeria’s foreign policy and economic strategies.
Africa’s Position on UN Security Council Reform
Ambassador Tuggar reiterated Nigeria’s stance on the need for reforming the UN Security Council, emphasizing that Africa has a unified position on this matter. He pointed to the Ezulwini Consensus and the Sirte Declaration, which advocate for at least two permanent seats for African nations. Nigeria is also advocating for increased funding and support for peacekeeping operations, given its long-standing participation in UN missions.
The Foreign Affairs Minister also mentioned Nigeria’s continued engagement on regional conflicts, including the situation in Gaza, Palestine, Eastern Congo, and Sudan. The Vice President is scheduled to meet with the Prime Minister of Sudan and participate in the African Union Peace and Security Council meeting.
Economic Prospects and Investment Opportunities
Governor of Kaduna State, Senator Uba Sani, expressed optimism about Nigeria’s participation in the UNGA as an opportunity to reposition the country as a leading investment destination in Africa. He highlighted Nigeria’s strengths in solid mineral resources, agriculture, and skills-based education.
The Governor noted that the Vice President’s speech, scheduled for Wednesday, will outline Nigeria’s strategic priorities and reinforce its vision of becoming a top economy in the region. This aligns with the broader goal of attracting foreign investment and fostering economic growth.
Sustainable Development and Economic Reforms
Dr. Olajumoke Omoniyi Oduwole, the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to promoting sustainable development and integrating it with national goals. She outlined several initiatives, including the Nigeria Investment Day on Monday, where the Vice President will highlight priority sectors such as solid minerals, telecommunications, and technology.
These events aim to showcase Nigeria’s progress in economic reforms over the past two years and strengthen relationships with international partners. The Minister stressed the importance of ensuring that all stakeholders are well-informed about Nigeria’s current position and future aspirations.
Conclusion
Nigeria’s participation in the 80th UNGA reflects its growing role on the global stage. Through strategic engagements, policy advocacy, and economic outreach, the country aims to enhance its influence and secure a more prominent position in international affairs.
