SLT-Mobitel to Fuel Regional Tech and Communication Hub Development

Strategic Vision for Sri Lanka’s Digital Transformation

Sri Lanka is undergoing a significant transformation in its approach to technology and communications, with SLT-Mobitel playing a central role in this evolution. The company's Chairman, Dr. Mothilal De Silva, has emphasized that Mobitel will provide maximum support to the government's initiative to establish Sri Lanka as a technology and communications hub in the region. He highlighted that the company will remain fully committed to the objectives of the "Digital Sri Lanka" program, ensuring alignment with both national goals and corporate strategies.

SLT-Mobitel has emerged as a strategic enabler for the nation, driving Sri Lanka's digital future through its innovative efforts. Following a robust financial recovery, the company has transitioned into a thriving national asset that supports the country's digitalization efforts and fuels economic growth across all sectors.

Financial Recovery and Future Growth

The solid return to profitability in the first half of 2025 marks a turning point for SLT-Mobitel. Once considered for divestment, the company is now positioned to deliver on its mandate of building digital infrastructure that defines Sri Lanka's technological landscape and economic prosperity. Dr. De Silva outlined the company's vision to become the national broadband network, national data center, and national cloud, transforming Sri Lanka into a digital nerve system.

This transformation is anchored by SLT-Mobitel's pivotal role in digitalizing the public sector. The Lanka Government Network (LGN) serves as the backbone for inter-agency connectivity, enabling seamless collaboration and supporting e-governance platforms at all levels. Managed by SLT-Mobitel under the direction of the Ministry of Digital Economy, the LGN ensures stability, security, and scalability, creating a solid foundation for the nation's evolving digital governance framework.

Complementing the LGN, the Lanka Government Cloud (LGC), also managed by SLT-Mobitel, provides a scalable, future-ready infrastructure for smart governance applications. The LGC supports artificial intelligence, big data analytics, and advanced digital services, positioning government agencies to deliver more responsive and efficient public services.

Investment in Digital Infrastructure

Dr. De Silva emphasized that SLT-Mobitel has consistently invested in building and modernizing Sri Lanka's digital infrastructure. These substantial investments cover fibre networks, 4G and 5G technologies, and cloud platforms, forming the backbone of the nation's digital transformation. The dramatic financial turnaround in the first half of 2025 has laid the essential foundation for the company's future initiatives.

"We transformed a previous loss of LKR 323 million into a profit after tax of LKR 4.28 billion, with revenue rising to LKR 55.2 billion and EBITDA surging to LKR 21.7 billion. The achievement, driven by operational excellence and disciplined management, now empowers us to accelerate national digital initiatives, invest in next-generation technologies, and deliver on the promise to power Sri Lanka's digital future," he added.

Launching Sri Lanka's 5G Network

SLT-MOBITEL is set to launch Sri Lanka's 5G network following successful trials and ongoing procurement. The strategic combination of spectrum bands will deliver optimal performance and record savings over five years. The commercial 5G rollout aims to transform industries with ultra-low latency and massive connectivity, enabling smart cities, autonomous systems, and real-time applications. This initiative places Sri Lanka at the forefront of global digital innovation.

Commitment to Sustainable Growth

Dr. De Silva reiterated the company's commitment to transforming SLT-Mobitel into a sustainably managed enterprise. This includes delivering world-class connectivity and innovation to uplift future generations. By focusing on long-term growth and strategic investments, SLT-Mobitel is poised to play a critical role in shaping Sri Lanka's digital future.
