Personal Memories and Emotional Tributes
Friends and fellow performers have shared their memories of Marina. Carlos Bryan Martinez Sanchez, a fellow performer, said, "I still can't believe it. It was a pleasure to share the floor with you. A hug to you in Heaven."
Spanish friend Puri Galan Gonzalez wrote an emotional tribute online, accompanied by a photo of a pink rose and Marina performing: "My saddest rose to bid farewell to Marina Barcelo. Your life was the circus and the trapeze, stolen from you by an unfortunate accident. My God, what a tragedy. I am so sorry. Your passion for gymnastics brought me together with your mother many years ago, and our affection continues to this day. You are leaving us too soon. It is a terrible blow for your mother, and I don't know what to say to her."
A Life Dedicated to the Arts
Marina had been a circus artist since 2018 and a gymnast for around a decade. She once stated on a website: "Every day I strive to perfect my technique and explore new ways to surprise and excite the audience. Over the years, I have had the opportunity to perform in a variety of venues around Europe such as Germany, Spain, and Poland. Each experience has taught me something new, from how to adapt to different stages to the importance of connecting with the people watching me. I believe art has the power to create unforgettable moments, and that's what I try to transmit in each of my performances."
She worked across various disciplines, including aerial acrobatics, tightrope walking, stilt walking, and one-wheel shows. She also enjoyed playing characters, such as the little mermaid in a real aquarium or in the waterbowl, which transported the audience to magical worlds.
Impact on the Audience
Around 100 people were watching the Paul Busch Circus show when the incident occurred. Many parents with children reportedly reacted to her fall by covering up their kids' eyes, while others fled the tent. Traumatised audience members were offered specialised support. The circus cancelled its run of shows in the wake of the tragedy.
A note posted in the ticket booth read: "Due to a bereavement, the circus will be closed."
Community Response
Bautzen mayor Karten Vogt expressed his condolences: "The accident has deeply affected us. On behalf of the city, I express my sincere condolences to the relatives and bereaved. Our thoughts are with the families and all those affected by this terrible accident."
An investigation into the tragedy is ongoing, with speculation about whether Marina could have suffered a health problem.
