Trump’s Golden Vision: Transforming the White House into a Gilded Palace

Donald Trump has always had a flair for the dramatic, and his recent renovations to the Oval Office and other areas of the White House are no exception. The U.S. President has taken it upon himself to turn the iconic space into a glittering showcase of his personal style, emphasizing gold at every turn. From gilded accents to grand architectural changes, Trump's vision is nothing short of extravagant.

A Gold-Plated Interior

During a tour of the Oval Office with a Fox News reporter, Trump proudly showcased his latest additions. He corrected the guest when she referred to the figures over the doors as cherubs, insisting they were angels. “They say angels bring good luck, and we need a lot of luck in this country,” he said. While some might question the accuracy of his statement, the key point is that Trump sees these elements as symbols of fortune and success.

The office now glows with an overwhelming amount of gold, including gilded carvings, gold mouldings, and even gold curtains. Trump has also added more portraits of past presidents, all framed in ornate gold, further emphasizing the theme of grandeur. The mantelpiece is now lined with antique urns and vases, while a large FIFA World Cup trophy sits on the presidential desk. The overall effect is a space that feels more like a palace than a political office.

A Taste for Opulence

Trump’s love for gold is not new. He has long been known for his lavish taste, evident in his other properties such as Trump Tower in New York and Mar-a-Lago in Florida. His insistence on using real gold rather than paint or imitation materials has become a talking point. “People have tried to come up with a gold paint that would look like gold, and they’ve never been able to do it,” he explained. “That’s why it’s gold.”

This obsession with gold extends to even the smallest details, such as the button used to order a Diet Coke. It is now gold and sits in a wooden box bearing the presidential seal. Trump often jokes that people might mistake it for the nuclear missile launch button, highlighting his penchant for humor and theatrics.

Beyond the Oval Office: The Rose Garden Makeover

Trump’s transformation of the White House doesn’t stop at the Oval Office. He has also made significant changes to the Rose Garden, which was once a symbol of traditional elegance. The lawn, where President Ronald Reagan famously walked with Margaret Thatcher, has been replaced with concrete and a white marble patio. This change was justified by Trump as a practical decision, citing the inconvenience of grass for women wearing high heels.

The new terrace, named the Rose Garden Club, features giant umbrellas imported from Mar-a-Lago and is designed for entertaining guests with food from the White House kitchen and music chosen by the President. While some may find the transformation unappealing, others see it as a modernization of a historic space.

The Grand Ballroom: A Monumental Addition

Perhaps the most ambitious project is the planned 90,000-square-foot ballroom, which will cost an estimated £157 million. Trump has already begun construction on the South Lawn, and the design includes white and gold interiors, with large chandeliers and gold-plated amenities. The ballroom is reminiscent of the one at Mar-a-Lago, complete with gold leaf walls and gold-plated basins in the Ladies’ room.

White House historian Kate Andersen Brower acknowledges that the space could be seen as necessary, given the lack of a proper entertainment area. However, she expresses concerns about the design and the potential for it to appear garish. “I worry about the oversight,” she says. “He’s in charge of everything and not open to a lot of suggestions.”

A Legacy of Bling

Trump’s vision for the White House reflects his larger-than-life personality and his desire to leave a lasting impression. Unlike previous presidents who viewed their time in the White House as temporary, Trump sees it as an opportunity to make his mark. His renovations are not just about aesthetics but also about creating a space that aligns with his personal brand and values.

Critics argue that the changes are excessive and out of step with the traditional dignity of the presidency. Others, however, see it as a reflection of the times and a bold statement of American excess. Whether one views the transformations as impressive or over-the-top, there is no denying that Trump’s approach to the White House has been anything but ordinary.
