Trump's Top Policy Fueling 2028 Republican Bid

Trump's Immigration Focus Could Shape 2028 Election
A recent poll has suggested that President Donald Trump could strengthen his position within the Republican Party by emphasizing immigration as a key issue for the 2028 election. The findings from a survey conducted by Reuters/Ipsos, which included responses from 1,016 Americans between September 19 and 21, revealed that Trump currently holds 42 percent support on immigration-related matters. This is significantly higher than former President Joe Biden’s approval rating of 26 percent, as reported in a December 2024 poll.
During a brief period in late February to early March of this year, 50 percent of Americans approved of Trump’s mass deportation policies, indicating a momentary surge in public support. While Trump maintains a stronger reputation on economic issues compared to Biden, the gap is not substantial. In December, Biden's approval rating on the economy dropped to a dismal 34 percent, while Trump's approval was initially at 43 percent when he took office. However, the latest data shows that Trump’s economic approval has since fallen to around 35 percent, aligning more closely with Biden’s low levels.
This decline comes amid the Trump administration’s efforts to impose tariffs on nearly every country globally. Additionally, in August, the unemployment rate climbed to 4.3 percent, marking a near four-year high, and inflation continued to rise. Despite these challenges, the Reuters poll also noted a slight dip in Trump’s approval rating, from 42 percent three weeks prior to 41 percent.
However, there are still positive signs for Trump. Alyssa Farah Griffin, a former White House Director of Strategic Communication under Trump, highlighted the poll results during an appearance on The View. She argued that Trump would likely win if the election were held today, stating that “on the top issues people voted on, they still trust Republicans more.” According to the poll, Americans believe the GOP has better ideas on seven out of eleven topics. On the most critical voting issues—economy and immigration—Americans overwhelmingly feel that the GOP handles them more effectively.
Republicans also enjoy a 20 percentage point lead over Democrats on crime, an area where Trump has focused on deploying troops to troubled U.S. cities. The poll also indicates that Americans think the GOP has better solutions on foreign conflicts, gun control, political extremism, and corruption. Conversely, Democrats are more trusted on issues such as respect for democracy, healthcare, women's rights, and the environment.
While it is still early to predict the outcome of the 2028 election, betting markets earlier this year identified Vice President JD Vance as a strong contender. Most forecasters anticipate that Republicans may lose their narrow majority in the House of Representatives during the 2026 midterms but will retain control of the Senate.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, the effectiveness of Trump’s strategies on immigration and the economy will play a crucial role in shaping the future of the Republican Party. With key issues like immigration and the economy remaining central to voter concerns, the party’s ability to address these challenges will be pivotal in determining its success in upcoming elections.
