Vietnam Welcomes 15.4 Million International Visitors in 9 Months

Rising Numbers in Vietnam's Tourism Sector
Vietnam has seen a notable increase in the number of foreign visitors during the first nine months of the year. The total reached 15.4 million, representing a 21.5% year-on-year growth. However, this figure is still below the country’s target of 25 million for the entire year.
Top Source Markets for Tourists
Mainland China continues to be the leading source market for tourists visiting Vietnam. In the first nine months, it accounted for 3.8 million arrivals, marking a 43% increase compared to the previous year. South Korea follows closely with 3.2 million visitors, while Taiwan recorded 926,000 arrivals. The United States and Japan each contributed approximately 622,000 and 617,000 visitors respectively.
The remaining top 10 markets include India with 504,000 arrivals, Cambodia with 489,000, Russia with 435,000, Malaysia with 405,000, and Australia with 401,000.
Strong Performance in the Third Quarter
The tourism industry saw a significant boost in the third quarter, with 4.7 million foreign arrivals reported. This marks a 23% year-on-year increase, reflecting a positive trend in visitor numbers.
Factors Contributing to Growth
Tourism experts have identified several factors contributing to Vietnam's strong performance. These include favorable visa policies, expanded promotional campaigns, and a series of events held to celebrate major national holidays.
Expansion of Visa Waiver Policies
In August, the Vietnamese government took a significant step by waiving visa requirements for citizens of 12 additional countries. These include Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Hungary, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Switzerland. Visitors from these nations can now stay in Vietnam for up to 45 days without a visa.
This move expands Vietnam's unilateral visa waiver list to 24 countries, with the total number of countries benefiting from its exemption policy reaching 39.
Future Targets and Comparisons
Vietnam aims to welcome between 23 and 25 million foreign tourists by the end of the year. In comparison, Thailand welcomed 24.11 million foreign tourists from January 1 to September 30, which represents a 7.5% decrease compared to the same period last year.
Conclusion
Despite falling short of its target, Vietnam's tourism sector has shown resilience and growth, driven by strategic policies and effective marketing efforts. As the country continues to enhance its appeal to international travelers, it remains well-positioned to achieve its goals in the coming months.
