Overview of the International Competition for the National Symbol Zone
An international competition has been launched to determine the master plan for the National Symbol Zone in Sejong City. This area will house key institutions such as the presidential office and the National Assembly building, along with civic spaces that reflect the nation's dignity and future aspirations. The competition has received 13 entries from domestic and international urban and architectural design experts. The final selection of the winning design is scheduled to be announced on the 12th of next month, incorporating public opinion into the decision-making process.
Background and Objectives of the Competition
The National Agency for Administrative City Construction (NAACC) announced on the 21st that a total of 13 teams submitted their proposals for the international competition. These teams consist of professionals from various fields, including urban planning and architecture. According to an NAACC official, the competition aims to develop a comprehensive urban design plan that includes the National Assembly’s Sejong building, the presidential office in Sejong, and public spaces. The goal is to create a space that symbolizes national identity and embodies the values Korea seeks to achieve in the future.
Location and Scope of the National Symbol Zone
The National Symbol Zone will be located in the S-1 residential area of Sejong-dong, which is the central part of Sejong City. The area covers 2.1 million square meters and is considered prime real estate. It will be developed with key facilities such as the National Assembly and the presidential office, alongside spaces designed for public use.
Process and Stages of the Competition
The competition followed several stages, beginning with the announcement on September 2nd. Teams were invited to submit their applications, attend on-site briefings, and participate in Q&A sessions before submitting their final entries. This structured approach ensured that all participants had a clear understanding of the requirements and expectations.
Evaluation Committee and Public Involvement
A seven-member jury committee was established to evaluate the submissions. This committee includes experts in urban planning, architecture, landscaping, and cultural arts, ensuring a fair and professional assessment of the designs. The evaluation criteria include creativity, spatial composition, and feasibility of the proposed plans.
In addition to the jury’s evaluation, a public voting period will take place from the 22nd to the 28th. Korean adults can vote for up to three designs after verifying their identity through the official competition website and the NAACC’s official website. The top three designs with the most votes will receive bonus points, contributing to the overall evaluation.
Selection Process and Final Announcement
The first screening will occur on the 1st of next month, selecting the top five designs based on the jury’s evaluation and public voting results. A second screening will take place on the 10th, leading to the final announcement of the winning design on the 12th.
Statement from the NAACC Director General
NAACC Director General Kang Joo-yeop emphasized the high level of creativity in the submitted designs. He expressed hope that the National Symbol Zone would become a space that instills pride in all citizens, with public opinions reflected throughout the planning process. This initiative underscores the importance of community involvement in shaping the future of Sejong City.
