18 Honorees Chosen for Extraordinary Family Devotion

Overview of the 27th Gachon Filial Piety Grand Prize

Eighteen individuals, including teenagers who have demonstrated filial piety and 'filial daughters' who have cared for their families abroad, have been chosen as winners of the 27th Gachon Filial Piety Grand Prize. These recipients will be awarded a total scholarship of 101 million Korean won. The Gachon Cultural Foundation announced on the 19th that it selected 18 winners across four categories through a final deliberation committee composed of 10 experts from various fields. This selection followed document reviews and on-site inspections of candidates who applied nationwide.

Male Category: Encouraging Filial Piety Among Teenagers

In the male category of the Gachon Filial Piety Award, which encourages teenagers who have practiced filial piety toward their parents, Kim Jae-u, 24 years old, a third-year student at Hansung University, was selected. Mr. Kim donated his liver to his father, who was suffering from liver cancer, last year. Although he is still receiving hospital treatment for post-transplant complications, he feels a sense of pride seeing his father regain health after the liver transplant surgery.

The main awards were given to Kim Ji-hu, 15 years old, a third-year student at Seokdong Middle School; Lee Han-ung, 18 years old, a third-year student at Busan Tourism High School; and special awards to Park Yuniti, 12 years old, a sixth-grade student at Saenamul School; Song Yeong-gwang, 15 years old, a first-year student at Global Village High School; and Sim Seong-hyeon, 17 years old, a second-year student at Kyungmin IT High School.

Female Category: Demonstrating Care and Dedication

In the female category of the Gachon Filial Piety Award, Lee Ji-won, 23 years old, a fourth-year student at Gachon University, was selected. Ms. Lee’s father suffers from Parkinson’s disease, and her mother is battling breast cancer. Despite the challenging family circumstances, she is said to be diligently caring for her parents.

The main awards were given to Jeon Ji-hyo, 11 years old, a fifth-grade student at Seoul Semyung Elementary School; Choi Seo-yeon, 21 years old, a second-year student at Chungnam National University; Park Ji-ye, 21 years old, a third-year student at Gyeongin National University of Education; and Jeong Hae-won, 17 years old, a first-year student at Busan Cultural Girls’ High School.

Multicultural Filial Daughters Award: Caring for Families Abroad

In the Multicultural Filial Daughters Award, which encourages filial daughters who have cared for their families abroad, Yoon Ji-su, 35 years old, originally from the Philippines, was selected. After marrying 17 years ago and settling in Gimje City, North Jeolla Province, Ms. Yoon cared for her father-in-law, who had mobility issues, until his passing. She currently takes care of her mother-in-law, who has dementia.

The main awards were given to Bae Ju-hyeon, 41 years old, from China, and Jeong Eun-kyeong, 41 years old, from Vietnam.

Multicultural Supporters Award: Supporting Multicultural Families

In the Multicultural Supporters Award, which encourages organizations that have assisted multicultural families, the grand prize was awarded to Dream Seekers Regional Children’s Center (Incheon), and the special award to Global Mission Center (Ansan, Gyeonggi Province). For the Filial Piety Education Award, which promotes filial piety education, the grand prize went to Benjamin Character Talent School (Cheonan, South Chungcheong Province), and the special award to teacher An Mi-rim (Sinmyeong Girls’ High School).

Awards and Benefits for Winners

The winners will receive a total scholarship fund of 101 million Korean won along with commemorative plaques. Grand prize winners in each category will receive 10 million Korean won, main award winners 5 million Korean won, and special award winners 3 million Korean won.
