7 Hong Kong Runners Missing Bags After Wi-Fi Failure Causes Chaos
Organiser Faces Criticism After Baggage Collection Chaos at Hong Kong Streetathon
RunOurCity, the event organiser behind the Kerry Hong Kong Streetathon, has faced significant backlash after a chaotic baggage collection process left several runners struggling to retrieve their personal belongings. The incident, which occurred during the event's peak hours, was attributed to technical issues with the Wi-Fi system and a failure in the QR code scanning technology.
Andes Leung Pak-hang, CEO and co-founder of RunOurCity, expressed his apologies for the situation on Monday. He explained that the team had aimed to streamline the baggage collection process by using a new technology this year. This involved scanning QR codes on runners' bibs to log and sort their bags by race groups. However, due to discrepancies in signal strength and a Wi-Fi breakdown, the system failed to function properly during the busiest times.

Leung mentioned that a backup system had been prepared, but it also did not work as expected. As a result, staff were forced to handle the bags manually, which led to further complications. He revealed that seven runners were still unable to locate their bags following the event. The team is currently working to clear out the area and remains in contact with those affected.
The CEO admitted that the team lacked sufficient manpower to manage the manual sorting of bags or to prevent runners from rushing into the storage room to search for their belongings. This lack of coordination contributed to the chaos and added to the frustration experienced by participants.
Leung acknowledged that the incident could damage the race's reputation and stated that he would take appropriate measures to review what went wrong. He expressed his shame over the situation, noting that every year there are things the team fails to do well.
This is not the first time the event has faced criticism. Last year, some half-marathon runners complained they ran an extra 9km (5.6 miles) after a volunteer provided incorrect directions.
Impact on Event Reputation
The recent incident has raised concerns about the reliability of the event's infrastructure and management. Runners who participated in the Streetathon described the experience as disorganised and stressful, with many spending hours searching through thousands of bags to find their belongings. The use of new technology was intended to improve efficiency, but the failure of the system highlighted the risks associated with relying on such tools without proper backup plans.
Organisers have since promised to address these issues and ensure that future events are better managed. However, the current situation has already left a lasting impression on participants, some of whom may be hesitant to return in the future.
Lessons Learned
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of thorough planning and contingency measures when organising large-scale events. While the introduction of new technologies can enhance the participant experience, it is crucial to have reliable backup systems in place to prevent disruptions.
For RunOurCity, the challenge now is to regain the trust of its participants and demonstrate that lessons have been learned from the recent mishaps. This will require not only addressing the immediate issues but also implementing long-term improvements to ensure smoother operations in the future.
Future Steps
In response to the feedback received, the organisers have committed to reviewing all aspects of the event planning process. This includes evaluating the effectiveness of the technology used, assessing the adequacy of staffing levels, and improving communication with participants.
By taking these steps, RunOurCity hopes to rebuild its reputation and provide a more positive experience for runners in the coming years. The focus will be on creating a more efficient and organised event that minimises the risk of similar incidents occurring again.
