Alexa+ Becomes AI Assistant, Managing Tickets and Suggestions

A Glimpse into Amazon’s Secret Lab

Around 1 p.m. local time on the 5th, at Amazon’s headquarters in Seattle, Washington. After stepping off the elevator on the 30th floor of the Day 1 Building and passing through a door marked “restricted area,” a “household” appeared. Refrigerators, TVs, and other appliances, along with furniture including a sofa, were arranged as if someone lived there. This is a laboratory for developing Amazon’s voice assistant “Alexa” and the device “Echo” that integrates it. Amazon first opened this lab, dubbed the “Amazon secret apartment,” to an overseas press corps, and among domestic media, this newspaper was the only one granted access.

Alexa, Evolving into a Smarter AI Assistant

“Alexa,” embedded in the voice-recognition smart speaker “Echo,” was first released in 2015 as a voice assistant that played music, set alarms, and performed similar functions. At the time, reactions praised it as “a science fiction (SF) film becoming reality,” with a speaker that could understand and respond to speech. However, as most users only utilized basic functions like music, weather, and alarms, the Alexa and Devices division faced a slump, including layoffs of over 2,000 employees.

Amazon is preparing for a second leap by launching “Alexa Plus (+),” which adds AI agent capabilities to the existing Alexa, in March. Like ChatGPT, it can engage in deep conversations on any topic, manage smart homes, and perform actions such as shopping and reservations on the user’s behalf. The Echo device, now equipped with Alexa+, has evolved to include models with displays, becoming a secretary that can see, hear, and speak.

When Vice President Raush, who guided the site, asked Alexa, “I want to buy a coffee machine. Please recommend one,” it displayed a list of coffee machines sold on the Amazon app with ratings of 4 stars or higher. When asked, “Please inform me about the ice hockey game in Seattle tonight,” it replied, “There is a game against the San Jose team at 7 p.m.” When the user added, “I want two seats near the ice,” it recommended seats in Zone 24, Row AA, and asked if the user wanted to purchase them. There were no restrictions on conversation topics. It was stated that conversations are possible not only on general knowledge but also on academic subjects like science and geology.

Amazon’s Strengths in the AI Agent Era

Alexa+’s strength lies in its “multi-model” strategy. Over 70 large language models (LLMs) are connected to Alexa+. When a user gives a specific task, the system automatically selects the most suitable model. Alongside this, it has “AI orchestration” capabilities that connect with thousands of system APIs and external systems to handle complex commands effectively. For example, a command like “Summarize the meeting, add it to the schedule, and find related news” is executed simultaneously, like an orchestra.

Amazon aims to strengthen its competitiveness in the AI agent era through this approach. The AI technology race has evolved from LLM competition to multimodal model competition—combining images and videos—and recently shifted focus to AI agent competition, where agents directly predict and act.

In addition to developing Alexa+, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Amazon’s cloud service subsidiary, is preparing for the full-scale AI agent era by operating “Agent Core,” an AI agent platform that collaborates with “AI colleagues” with diverse abilities and features. Matt Garman, AWS Chief Executive Officer (CEO), said, “AWS is continuing large-scale investments, planning a capital investment of 125 billion dollars over 12 months. After introducing AI agents, we saw remarkable results where team efficiency improved by 4 to 5 times.”

Future Prospects and Innovations

As Amazon continues to invest heavily in AI technologies, the company is positioning itself at the forefront of the next wave of digital innovation. With the introduction of Alexa+ and the development of Agent Core, Amazon is not just enhancing its existing products but also redefining the role of AI assistants in everyday life. These advancements suggest that the future of smart home technology and personal AI assistance will be more integrated, intuitive, and capable than ever before.

The integration of multiple AI models and the ability to handle complex tasks through AI orchestration represent a significant step forward in the evolution of AI. This approach allows for more seamless interactions between users and their devices, making the experience more natural and efficient.

Moreover, the collaboration between different AI models and external systems opens up new possibilities for personalized services and automated solutions. As these technologies mature, they have the potential to transform various aspects of daily life, from managing household tasks to providing educational support and professional assistance.

With such ambitious goals and substantial investments, Amazon is setting the stage for a future where AI is not just a tool but an essential part of our lives. The company’s commitment to innovation and its strategic vision for the AI agent era highlight its determination to lead in the rapidly evolving tech landscape.
