Asia's Top Winter Getaway: Russia's Favorite Island Escape

Shift in Russian Tourist Preferences

In recent years, the traditional favorite destination of Nha Trang has not been the only Vietnamese location capturing the attention of Russian tourists. A growing number of travelers are exploring other regions such as Phu Quoc, which was recently recognized as the most beautiful island in Asia by readers of the American magazine Condé Nast Traveler. This shift indicates a broader interest in Vietnam's diverse offerings, with more visitors seeking unique experiences beyond the well-known coastal city.

Despite some unfavorable weather conditions in various parts of Vietnam, Russian travel agencies have reported no cancellations or reductions in tour bookings to the country. This resilience highlights the continued appeal of Vietnam as a winter getaway for Russian tourists, even amid challenges like short-term flooding in certain areas.

Stability in Nha Trang

One Click Travel, a company that serves a significant number of clients traveling to Nha Trang, has confirmed that the city center remains stable. The tourism infrastructure continues to function normally, and accommodation facilities are still welcoming guests. While some suburban residential areas experienced short-term flooding, tourist zones were largely unaffected.

Anara Uralova, General Director of One Click Travel, emphasized that necessary adjustments have been made to sightseeing schedules to ensure safety and convenience. Some excursions have been temporarily rescheduled or replaced with alternative routes. Despite concerns raised by travelers about the recent floods, there have been no major disruptions or widespread cancellations.

Impact of Weather on Resort Operations

Artur Muradyan, CEO of Space Travel, noted that weather conditions have had limited impact on resort operations. This suggests that the overall experience for tourists remains positive, with minimal interference from environmental factors.

Beyond Nha Trang, Russian tourists are also showing increased interest in destinations like Phu Quoc and Phan Thiet. These locations are gaining popularity due to their natural beauty and growing infrastructure.

Expansion of Air Connectivity

Direct flights from several major Russian cities to Phu Quoc are expected to launch later this year. This development is anticipated to significantly boost the number of Russian tourists visiting the southern Vietnamese island during the 2025–2026 winter season. In addition, a Vietnamese airline has announced plans to operate direct flights from key cities in Russia’s Far East, including Vladivostok, Blagoveshchensk, and Khabarovsk, starting in October and November.

Phu Quoc has already seen a surge in visitor numbers, welcoming nearly 7.1 million tourists in the first 10 months of the year—an increase of 34.2% compared to the previous year. This trend reflects the growing appeal of the island among international travelers.

Strong Growth in Tourism Data

Earlier reports by the Russian Travel Industry Association (RTI) highlighted Vietnam’s position as one of the top destinations for package tour sales in 2025. Many well-known hotels have already been fully booked for the New Year holiday, indicating strong demand from Russian tourists.

According to data from the Border Guard Department under Russia’s Federal Security Service, tourist arrivals from Russia to Vietnam reached 153,000 in the first nine months of 2025—five times higher than the 20,600 recorded in the same period last year. This dramatic increase underscores the growing popularity of Vietnam as a winter destination for Russian travelers.
