African Union's Role in Resolving the Sudan Crisis

On November 18, 2025, in Addis Ababa, the African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Bankole Adeoye, emphasized the critical role of the African Union in leading the peace process in Sudan. He reiterated that sustainable solutions to the crisis must be rooted in the principle of “African solutions to African problems.” This statement underscores the importance of local leadership and self-determination in addressing the ongoing conflict.

Strengthening Collaboration with the United Nations

In an effort to enhance the legitimacy of its actions, the Commissioner highlighted the continuous coordination between the African Union and the United Nations. This collaboration involves high-level engagement with the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Sudan, Ramtane Lamamra. The aim is to unify various platforms and initiatives, ensuring a cohesive approach to the crisis and avoiding fragmented efforts.

During a press conference held in Addis Ababa on Tuesday, coinciding with the launch of the “African Union Journal on Post-Conflict Reconstruction,” Adeoye addressed the issue of foreign interference. He stated: “Regarding foreign interference, we do not allow those who try to fuel the conflict, and we condemn all forms of interference in Sudan.” This declaration reflects the Union’s commitment to safeguarding the sovereignty of member states.

Call for Immediate Ceasefire and Dialogue

Adeoye also stressed the importance of an immediate ceasefire, which he believes would create an opportunity for political actors to initiate a national dialogue. He emphasized the necessity of ending impunity and holding perpetrators of gross violations accountable. These steps are crucial in fostering a lasting peace and ensuring justice for the victims of the conflict.

Criticism from Sudanese Forces

Despite the recent activities of the Peace and Security Council and its decision to hold an upcoming presidential summit on the situation in Sudan, Sudanese political and civilian forces have criticized the African Union for what they perceive as a slow response to the crisis. This criticism highlights the challenges faced by the Union in balancing its commitments with the urgent needs of the affected populations.

Combating Terrorism and Building Security

On another note, Bankole Adeoye indicated that combating terrorism remains a top priority for the African Union. He emphasized the need to prevent conflicts and support states in building their security capabilities to defend their sovereignty. This focus on security aligns with the broader goals of promoting stability and development across the continent.

Conclusion

The African Union's role in resolving the Sudan crisis is pivotal, requiring a coordinated and decisive approach. The emphasis on African-led solutions, combined with international collaboration, is essential for achieving lasting peace. As the situation continues to evolve, the Union must remain vigilant and responsive to the needs of the people of Sudan.
