Catherine Demands End to Addiction Stigma

A Call for Compassion and Understanding

The Princess of Wales has taken a strong stance against the stigma surrounding addiction, emphasizing the need for empathy and support for individuals battling alcohol, drug, or gambling dependencies. Her message was delivered during Addiction Awareness Week, where she highlighted the progress made in understanding addiction while stressing that more efforts are still required.

Catherine, who is the patron of The Forward Trust, a charity dedicated to breaking the cycle of addiction, has been at the forefront of this campaign. The initiative runs from 23 to 30 November, aiming to raise awareness and encourage open discussions about addiction.

In her address, Catherine draws parallels between addiction and mental health, stating that addiction is not a choice or a personal failing but a complex mental health condition that demands empathy and support. She pointed out that despite advancements, many people still face fear, shame, and judgment when dealing with addiction, which allows it to thrive in secrecy, affecting families and communities.

She urged individuals to show compassion and love to those struggling with addiction, encouraging them to reach out to organizations like The Forward Trust for assistance. Catherine emphasized that recovery is challenging but achievable with the right treatment, starting with a conversation, a listening ear, and showing care.

A Continued Effort

The princess launched the first Addiction Awareness Week in 2021 on behalf of the trust and its Taking Action on Addiction campaign. Her message concluded with a call for open conversations to bring addiction and its harmful effects "out of the shadows."

A Personal Journey and Advocacy

This is not the first time Catherine has spoken out on the issue of addiction. In 2022, she offered her personal support to those facing addictions, emphasizing that shame should not prevent them from seeking help. She also encouraged a more compassionate public attitude towards the condition.

Tony Adams, a former England and Arsenal captain who spent 11 years in addiction, has recorded a video to launch a series of films showcasing the power of open conversations in the journey to recovery. In the film, he shares how a conversation with his mother-in-law Barbara was pivotal in getting him help.

Adams, now chairman of trustees at the Forward Trust, said: "If you are struggling with an addiction or a mental health issue, then please reach out and get the appropriate help. The greatest thing I ever did was to say, 'I can't do this.'"

Services and Support

The charity provides various services, including assistance with employment and addressing the problems of addicts and addictions within prisons. Before becoming the Forward Trust's patron, the Princess of Wales visited the charity's substance misuse services at HMP Send, a women's prison in Surrey.

The trust has also called for greater recognition of the scale of gambling inside prisons, highlighting the need for comprehensive support systems for those affected by addiction.
