Chairperson Lee Eog-weon: Closely Monitoring Exchange Rates, Minimizing Credit Loan Concerns

Financial Services Commission Chairperson Addresses Key Economic Issues
Chairperson Lee Eog-weon of the Financial Services Commission recently addressed several critical economic issues during his first press briefing. The discussion covered a range of topics, from exchange rate fluctuations to concerns over real estate policies and credit loan trends.
Exchange Rate Monitoring
Chairperson Lee emphasized that the commission is closely monitoring the recent sharp rise in exchange rates. He acknowledged the criticism that the government’s response to these fluctuations has been too lax. In response, he stated, “Through economic situation review meetings at the ministerial and vice-ministerial levels, we are continuously addressing the issue,” adding, “We are not neglecting or overlooking it.”
This statement reflects the commission's commitment to maintaining financial stability amid ongoing global economic uncertainties. The chairperson’s remarks indicate that the government is actively evaluating its approach to managing currency values and ensuring that appropriate measures are taken when necessary.
Real Estate Policies and Loan Regulations
Concerns have been raised about the impact of loan regulations under the June 27 and October 15 real estate measures on ordinary citizens' ability to purchase homes. Chairperson Lee expressed regret for the inconvenience experienced by real demanders among ordinary citizens. He explained, “I feel apologetic as real demanders among ordinary citizens are experiencing significant inconvenience,” while emphasizing, “From the initial planning stage, we reviewed such aspects and did not adjust the Loan-to-Value (LTV) ratio for policy mortgage loans primarily used by first-time homebuyers, young people, or newlyweds, keeping it the same as before.”
This clarification highlights the commission’s efforts to balance regulatory oversight with the needs of the general public. By maintaining the LTV ratio, the commission aims to support first-time buyers without compromising financial stability.
Personal Housing Acquisition
During the briefing, Chairperson Lee also addressed questions regarding his acquisition of a redevelopment apartment. He accepted criticism and provided context for his decision. In 2013, he purchased a pre-redevelopment apartment in Gaepo-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, while on an overseas assignment. He moved in only after the redevelopment was completed. This led to speculation about profiteering and criticism that he prioritized retaining the Gangnam apartment over accepting a special housing supply scheme intended for civil servants relocating to Sejong City.
In response, Chairperson Lee stated, “It was not about giving something up but a personal commitment to living as a one-household, one-homeowner for life. Regarding evaluations as a public official rather than an individual, I deeply reflect on the public’s perspective and must accept such criticism with greater consideration.”
His comments demonstrate a willingness to engage with public concerns and acknowledge the importance of transparency in public service.
Credit Loans and Household Debt
Chairperson Lee also discussed the recent surge in credit loans amid a bullish stock market. He noted, “While household loans have increased compared to the previous month, general home-backed loans, which stood at 4 trillion Korean won in June, have now dropped to around 1 trillion Korean won,” adding, “Credit loans fluctuate, but we do not view them as driving overall household debt growth or posing a threat to financial soundness.”
This observation suggests that while credit loans may experience volatility, they are not considered a major risk to the broader financial system. The commission continues to monitor these trends closely to ensure that any potential risks are managed effectively.
Insurrection Investigations
Finally, when asked about whether the Financial Services Commission is reviewing civil servants suspected of involvement in insurrection, Chairperson Lee responded, “Once the government provides guidelines or specific instructions on how to proceed, we will act accordingly.”
This statement underscores the commission’s role as a regulatory body that follows established procedures and guidelines. It also highlights the importance of coordination between different government agencies in addressing complex legal and security issues.
Overall, Chairperson Lee’s remarks reflect a balanced approach to economic governance, combining regulatory oversight with a commitment to public welfare and transparency.
