Major Internet Outage Caused by Cloudflare

A significant network outage caused by Cloudflare, a leading cloud infrastructure company, has disrupted multiple online services, including ChatGPT and X (formerly Twitter). The incident began at 8:48 p.m. on the 18th, as reported by Cloudflare, due to performance degradation in its internal services.

According to a representative from Cloudflare who spoke with Bloomberg News, "We detected a sudden surge in abnormal traffic to one of our services," which led to errors in some traffic passing through the Cloudflare network. This disruption affected a wide range of online platforms and services, highlighting the critical role that Cloudflare plays in managing internet traffic.

Cloudflare functions as a server optimization service provider, helping users access websites quickly and securely. While cloud platforms like Amazon Web Services (AWS) or Microsoft Azure provide foundational infrastructure such as servers and databases, Cloudflare is responsible for regulating server traffic, blocking hacking attempts, and delivering content rapidly to users. Given that approximately one-fifth of global internet traffic passes through Cloudflare’s network, any issues within its system can lead to large-scale disruptions.

Impact on Various Online Services

DownDetector, a service that monitors website outages, noted around 8:30 p.m. that "reports of disruptions surged across most sites, including Cloudflare." Affected services included OpenAI’s ChatGPT, X, Google, YouTube, Facebook, Amazon, the online game League of Legends, cloud services AWS and Microsoft Azure, cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, Moody’s credit rating service, and some digital services of the New Jersey Department of Transportation, which were halted or delayed.

The outage lasted for about three hours before Cloudflare announced around 11:42 p.m. that "the incident is now resolved." However, foreign media reported that the cause of the disruption remains under investigation.

Increasing Frequency of Cloud Service Disruptions

Recent disruptions in cloud services have become increasingly frequent, often causing global app and website outages. As numerous businesses and services rely on specific cloud and AI infrastructures, even minor failures or errors can now lead to larger-scale damage.

For example, last month, an outage in AWS’s 'US East 1 Region' in Virginia caused errors in global corporate and public services. The same month, an Azure outage paralyzed major services and apps worldwide. These incidents underscore the growing dependency on cloud infrastructure and the potential consequences of even brief disruptions.
