CU Introduces Mini Sashimi for Solo Diners, Catering to Single Households
New Sashimi Products Target Solo Drinkers
CU, a convenience store chain operated by BGF Retail, has introduced a new line of small-portion sashimi products designed to cater to individuals who prefer to drink alone. These products come with accompanying sauces to enhance the overall dining experience and provide added convenience for consumers.
On the 10th, BGF Retail announced that it will launch four small-portion sashimi items on the 12th. The products include "Aged Salmon Sashimi," "Aged Flatfish Sashimi," and "Chewy Gwamegi" (each priced at 13,900 Korean won, 70g), as well as "Aged Skate Sashimi" (9,900 Korean won, 100g). A representative from CU explained, "While sashimi is a popular drinking snack, delivery portions are often large, prices are high, and small purchases are difficult in stores, making it challenging for single-person households to enjoy. We aimed to meet the demand of single-person households and those who drink alone at home."

The aged salmon and flatfish sashimi use the "shiozume" salting method to enhance chewiness and umami, while the aged skate sashimi is fermented without off-flavors. The Gwamegi is produced using a low-temperature cold air drying method at a HACCP-certified facility in Pohang, Gyeongsangbuk-do, using ocean-caught fish. CU explained, "As freshness management is critical, we partner with manufacturers that have internationally certified quality systems, adhering to same-day production and shipment." Each product includes sauces like horseradish, soy sauce, wasabi, and spicy chili paste, along with separate compartments for the sauces.
Rising Sales of Drinking Snacks
Sales of anju (drinking snacks) at CU have been on the rise. Over the past three years, anju sales increased by 14.8% in 2023, 16.7% in 2024, and 15.4% in 2025 (January–October). Sales of refrigerated anju, including small-portion items like pig’s trotters, boiled pork, assorted blood sausages, chicken feet, and grilled intestines, surged 17.4% compared to the previous year. Over half (50.8%) of these products are sold in areas with high concentrations of single-person households, such as officetels and one-room neighborhoods.
A CU official added, "The demand for convenience store anju among one- to two-person households continues to grow, as they can enjoy these snacks reasonably without constraints." This trend reflects a growing preference for convenient, affordable, and satisfying options for individuals who prefer to dine or drink alone.
Convenience Meets Quality
The introduction of these small-portion sashimi products highlights CU's commitment to meeting the evolving needs of its customers. By focusing on convenience, quality, and variety, the brand aims to provide a broader range of options for solo diners and those looking for quick, tasty meals.
The inclusion of sauces and separate compartments ensures that customers can customize their meals according to their preferences. This attention to detail enhances the overall experience and makes the products more appealing to a wide range of consumers.
Future Outlook
With the increasing popularity of small-portion items and the rising demand for convenience store snacks, CU is well-positioned to capitalize on this trend. The success of the new sashimi line could pave the way for additional products tailored to the needs of single-person households and those who enjoy drinking alone.
As the market continues to evolve, brands like CU must remain agile and responsive to consumer preferences. By offering innovative, high-quality products that meet specific needs, convenience stores can maintain their relevance and continue to attract a loyal customer base.
