Diez Dola: Dropout Turned Music Sensation
A Rising Star in Rwanda’s Music Scene
In the ever-evolving world of the creative industry, many artists choose their paths for various reasons. For Kaleb Kayumba, known professionally as Diez Dola, music wasn’t just a passion—it was an urgent calling. From a young age, he felt a deep connection to music, one that he couldn’t ignore. This drive led him to make a bold decision: dropping out of school to pursue a short music course at the International Music School. His goal was clear—he wanted to build a professional career in music, not just create ordinary songs.
The Journey Begins
In 2019, Diez Dola left his traditional education behind and enrolled in a one-year program focused on audio production. “I didn’t want to make just ordinary music but a professional career,” he said. Gaining technical skills and broad musical perspectives was his main objective. However, the journey wasn’t without its challenges. After graduating in 2020, the global pandemic disrupted everything. He found himself caught between persuasion and ambition, unsure of how to move forward.
Despite these setbacks, he managed to release his first song, “Shake,” under Unlimited Records. “It gave me great feedback that pushed me to stay focused despite the unstable start,” he recalled. Later, he released “Monalisa” and “Ndagushaka,” but both were eventually removed from his platforms. “I wanted to craft better music,” he explained.
Songwriting as a Foundation
Songwriting has become a cornerstone of Diez Dola’s career. He described himself as more of a songwriter than anything else, a skill that has helped him secure funding for his music. By selling songs to producers, he has covered the costs of producing some of his tracks. “Songwriting flows in my veins. It comes naturally, and in return, it supports my music journey,” he said.
His contributions to hit songs like “Sambolera,” “Golo,” “Mami,” and “Jugumila” have solidified his reputation as a talented writer. These collaborations have not only expanded his reach but also given him the financial support needed to continue creating.
Breaking Through with “Zangalewa”
In 2024, Diez Dola released “Zangalewa,” a track that marked a major breakthrough in his career. He described the song as a symbol of “rushing, quick moves, doing things faster.” The track resonated with the youth in Kigali, where life is fast-paced and time is precious. “We don’t have time to waste. Gen Z may live a crazy life, but we shouldn’t lose our focus,” he explained.
Some people mistakenly assumed that his high energy came from substances, but he clarified that it’s simply a natural passion. “I don’t use any drugs. I make music out of love,” he said. “My energy comes naturally, and it will always be high and unmatched.”
The Power of Performance
Diez Dola’s first major stage appearance came during the Trace Awards and Festival in Kigali in October 2023. Rapper Ish Kevin gave him a few minutes on stage, an opportunity he cherished. “I’m so thankful to Ish Kevin. He did it out of nowhere. Such a gesture is all we need to uplift each other,” he said.
Since then, he has had several stage opportunities, and every performance is a chance to connect with his audience. “I love performing so much,” he added. While some senior artists recognize the efforts of rising musicians, he noted that mentorship and harmony within the industry are still lacking. “We learn from their mistakes and the good things they’ve done. It’s up to us to pick what matters,” he said.
Looking Ahead
Born in Kicukiro District in 2004, Diez Dola currently works independently with a small close-knit team. He is set to release a collaboration with Shemi later this month and remains determined to stay relevant. “Music is my dream, and quitting is nowhere in my plans,” he said.
With two albums and two EPs already written, he is preparing to share more of his work with the world. “None of this comes on a silver platter. It’s the result of sweat and sleepless nights,” he added.
