Dollar Weakens Against Dong on Black Market

U.S. Dollar's Performance in the Vietnamese Market

On Wednesday morning, the U.S. dollar experienced a slight decline against the Vietnamese dong in the black market. The greenback dropped by 0.24% compared to Tuesday's rate, reaching approximately VND27,772 at unofficial exchange points. Meanwhile, Vietcombank maintained its exchange rate at VND26,388, showing stability in its official rates. The State Bank of Vietnam also kept its reference rate unchanged at VND25,132.

Global Currency Trends

Globally, the U.S. dollar remained relatively stable against most major currencies during early trading in Asia on Wednesday. This stability came as investors turned to safe-haven assets following a prolonged global selloff in stock markets.

Impact on Equity Markets

This week has been particularly challenging for global equity markets. The S&P 500 has been on a four-day losing streak, driven by concerns over the valuations of AI stocks. Additionally, U.S. equity futures continued to show losses during Asian trading on Wednesday.

Key Currency Movements

The dollar index, which measures the greenback’s strength against a basket of six major currencies, remained flat at 99.594. This figure is close to a one-week high, reflecting the ongoing demand for U.S. Treasury bonds.

In contrast, the Japanese yen saw a slight increase of 0.1% after hitting a nine-month low against the dollar on Tuesday. The yen was trading at 155.49 to the dollar.

The Australian dollar weakened slightly to $0.65085, down by 0.1% in early trade. This movement followed data indicating that wages rose at a steady pace during the third quarter. Similarly, the New Zealand dollar (kiwi) declined by 0.2% to $0.5659.

European Currencies

The euro remained relatively stable at $1.1580, though it was trading near a one-week low of $1.1572 that was recorded during U.S. trading. The British pound (sterling) stayed unchanged at $1.3148 for the day.

Conclusion

The overall trend in currency movements reflects a cautious approach from investors amid uncertainty in global markets. While the U.S. dollar showed some resilience against major peers, the Vietnamese dong faced downward pressure in the black market. These dynamics highlight the complex interplay between global economic factors and local currency fluctuations.
