Democratic Party of Korea Leader Condemns Ongoing Insurrection and Calls for Accountability

Democratic Party of Korea leader Jung Chung-rae made a strong statement on the 24th, addressing what he described as “suspicious forces advocating insurrection” that are still active. He emphasized that the Democratic Party would take a firm stance against any remnants of the illegal martial law that took place on December 3, stating that they will follow a zero-tolerance principle.

During a meeting of the party’s Supreme Council at the National Assembly, Representative Jung highlighted concerns about the ongoing perception of Yoon Suk-yeol’s illegal martial law among citizens. He pointed out that even though it has been one year since the incident, many people still believe that the situation is continuing.

Jung stressed that the insurrection is not over and criticized the judicial system for its handling of the case. He specifically mentioned the Jee Kui-youn judiciary, accusing them of using “bed soccer” tactics to delay trials against Yoon Suk-yeol, the ringleader of the insurrection. This, according to Jung, has left no one accountable for the actions taken during the incident.

The People Power Party, which Jung accused of colluding with Yoon Suk-yeol, was also targeted in his remarks. He questioned their motives, saying it is absurd that they protest on the streets, claiming to fight for the recovery of people’s livelihoods and the protection of the rule of law. Jung suggested that their actions may be an indication of their potential dissolution as an unconstitutional party, but he called their advocacy of the rule of law hypocritical given their role in its destruction.

He further expressed concern that many citizens feel a sense of self-contempt while watching the insurrection trials. Jung questioned whether people could believe that someone like Yoon Suk-yeol could have been president. He condemned those who continue to shout “Yoon Again,” despite Yoon’s lack of responsibility and dignity, calling them either ignorant or despicable anti-constitutional, anti-democratic elements.

Jung reiterated the need for the People Power Party to first apologize for Yoon Suk-yeol’s actions before attempting to obstruct President Lee Jae-myung’s governance. He argued that those who supported Yoon’s illegal martial law must admit their wrongdoing, reflect on their actions, and face appropriate punishment. According to him, this is a duty owed to the citizens who suffered from the incident and a responsibility of a legitimate political party.

In conclusion, Jung stated that deceiving the public can no longer be tolerated. He warned that if necessary, the Democratic Party would pursue constitutional procedures to subject the People Power Party to a dissolution trial, considering it an unconstitutional party. His remarks underscored the party's commitment to upholding democratic values and ensuring accountability for past actions.
