Europe's Sunniest Winter Beach with Return Flights from £27

On the southern tip of Gran Canaria lies a vast, golden sand beach that is celebrated for its year-round sunshine and clear, blue waters. This Spanish resort, Maspalomas, offers average daily temperatures of 22°C and more than 10 hours of sunlight each day, making it an ideal destination to escape the cold British winter.

Known as the "Miami of Europe," Playa de Maspalomas stretches for six kilometers, flanked by large, rolling dunes. The beach has become a favorite spot for water sports, with seafront cafés, bars, and restaurants within easy walking distance. It was even recognized as the continent's sunniest winter beach by Saga, which compiled a list of beaches that receive the most hours of sunshine during the winter months.

Travelers have praised the beach on TripAdvisor, with one user commenting, "Probably one of the best and impressive places to go to in Gran Canaria, for free and as far as the eye can see. We went there in the evening when the sun was slowly setting and the temperatures were nice."

The beach is divided into different sections, including a lively area near the Playa del Inglés resort, a central area, and a western end that includes nudist areas. Visitors can enjoy a range of activities such as boat trips, whale watching, surfing, and canyon tours. Sunbathing is also a popular pastime due to the ample space available.

One of the standout features of the resort is the 68-meter lighthouse at the edge of the beach. Built in 1861, it once served as a crucial guide for steamboats traveling between Europe, Africa, and America. The lighthouse marks the start of the bustling Boulevard El Faro, which is filled with cocktail bars, designer shops, and restaurants.

For families, Aqualand is a must-visit waterpark featuring sea lions. Golf enthusiasts will appreciate the 18-hole course that overlooks the Maspalomas sand dunes.

The cost of travel to Gran Canaria is also appealing. Return flights from Luton Airport to Gran Canaria can be found for as low as £27. Once you arrive at Gran Canaria airport, the resort is just a 20-minute drive away.

From January to August 2025, an estimated 10 million international visitors are expected to travel to the Canary Islands. In 2024, nearly 6.3 million British tourists visited the region. Travel expert Marek Bron previously shared with the Daily Mail that exploring inland areas of Gran Canaria offers a more unexpected side of the island.

He said, "There are these wonderful mountain towns where the air is a little cooler, and you get beautiful mountain ranges where you can watch the sun rise. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the island's capital, also has incredible historic buildings and is a great place to go out and eat."
