Farmers Urged to Sow Wheat by 20th

Key Recommendations for Optimizing Wheat Production in Punjab
The Agriculture Department has issued a critical reminder to farmers across Punjab, urging them to complete wheat cultivation by November 20 to maximize production outcomes. As the most vital food crop in Pakistan, wheat plays a central role in the nation's food security. Punjab, known for its favorable climate and soil conditions, is targeting a production goal of 10.65 million acres this year. The province’s agricultural potential is significant, with opportunities to boost per-acre yields through proper farming techniques.
Cost Reduction Measures for Farmers
To support farmers in reducing their production costs, the government has taken several steps. One key measure is the reduction of certified wheat seed prices from Rs6,500 to Rs5,500 per bag. Additionally, both federal and provincial governments have set the wheat support price at Rs3,500 per 40 kg. These measures are aimed at making wheat cultivation more accessible and financially viable for farmers.
Recommended Wheat Varieties
Farmers are encouraged to use specific recommended varieties suited for irrigated areas. These include:
- Sawera-24
- Falak-24
- Champion
- Urooj-22
- Nishan-21
- Dilkash-20
- Subhani-21
- MH-21
- Durum-2021
- Sadiq-21
- Nawab-21
- NARC Super
- Akbar-19
- Bhakkar Star-19
- Ghazi-19
- Rehbar-21
- Fakhar Bhakkar-17
- Anaaj-17
- Ujala-16
- Zincol-16
- Borlaug-16
- Johar-16
- Faisalabad-2008
These varieties have been selected based on their high yield potential and adaptability to local conditions.
Seed Quality and Sowing Window
Farmers are advised to use certified, disease-free seeds with a germination rate of at least 85 percent. Free seed-grading services are available at Agriculture Extension offices across Punjab. The ideal sowing window for wheat is between November 1 and 20. According to research from the Agriculture Extension and Adaptive Research wings, sowing after November 20 can lead to a loss of nearly one percent of yield per day, or about 15 to 20 kg per acre. Delaying sowing beyond December could result in up to a 50 percent reduction in production.
Adjustments for Later Sowing
For sowing between November 21 and December 15, farmers are advised to increase the seed rate to 60 kg per acre. This adjustment helps compensate for lower temperatures that slow germination and reduce tillering. A higher seed rate also aids in controlling weed growth. Certified seeds from Punjab Seed Corporation and private seed companies are widely available throughout the province.
Seed Treatment and Field Preparation
The spokesperson emphasized the importance of treating seeds using a rotating drum or plastic bag method to ensure each grain is coated with fungicide. Proper field preparation is essential for good germination. Farmers are advised to plough fields at 2-3 day intervals to destroy weeds and make soil nutrients more available. Laser leveling and proper rauni irrigation before sowing can enhance results. Early-morning ploughing followed by repeated harrowing helps preserve soil moisture.
Soil Fertility Enhancements
Well-prepared and leveled fields are crucial for successful wheat cultivation. Using well-decomposed farmyard manure (8 to 10 tons per acre) can significantly improve soil fertility. In the absence of farmyard manure, green manuring with guar, jantar, or other legumes should be incorporated at flowering, at least two months before wheat sowing.
Impact on Food Security
By adopting approved wheat varieties and using certified seeds, farmers can increase wheat production by up to 20 percent. This improvement will play a vital role in ensuring the country’s food security and meeting growing demand.
