Ferrero Rocher's Italy-to-China Move Faces Outcry

Italian premium chocolate brand Ferrero Rocher has faced a wave of consumer backlash after it was revealed that the production site for products supplied to the South Korean market has shifted from Italy to China. Despite the company's assurances that there has been no change in product quality, many customers are expressing disappointment and concern over the shift.
According to industry sources, Ferrero Group recently began supplying Ferrero Rocher products manufactured at its Hangzhou, China factory to the South Korean market. This move has sparked mixed reactions among consumers and retailers alike.
Some domestic convenience stores and large supermarkets are currently selling a mix of remaining Italian-made stock and newly arrived Chinese-made products. It is expected that once the Italian stock is depleted, the products will likely be fully replaced with Chinese-made ones. The country of origin for Ferrero Rocher on major online malls is already listed as “China.”
Industry insiders believe that the production site change is a strategic move aimed at reducing global production costs. Recently, international cocoa prices have surged daily due to poor harvests and supply shortages. This has prompted global confectionery companies to look toward regions like China, where raw material procurement and production costs are relatively lower, as potential production bases.
However, some consumers express concerns that this change in origin could impact brand credibility. Ferrero Rocher has long been associated with its image as an “authentic Italian premium chocolate.” The shift in production may directly affect consumer perception and trust in the brand.

Consumer reactions have been largely negative. Online, dissatisfaction has poured in, with comments such as, “I bought it despite the high price because it was a premium Italian chocolate, but I won’t buy it if it’s made in China,” “There’s no reason to pay that price for a Chinese-made chocolate,” and “Shouldn’t they at least lower the price?”
Ferrero has responded to these concerns by stating that the relocation of production facilities was decided to maintain a stable supply chain. The company emphasized that product quality remains unchanged.
The company explained, “All global production facilities adhere to the same quality standards centrally defined by Ferrero Group,” and added, “Every factory producing Ferrero Rocher complies with the same comprehensive guidelines and quality requirements established by the group to manufacture the product at the same high level.”
Furthermore, Ferrero noted that products manufactured in Hangzhou have already been supplied to the Chinese domestic market and parts of Southeast Asia and the Middle East. This suggests that the company is confident in the quality and consistency of its Chinese-made products.
Despite these assurances, the shift in production location has raised questions about the future of the brand's identity and consumer loyalty. As the global market continues to evolve, companies must balance cost efficiency with maintaining brand integrity. For Ferrero Rocher, the challenge lies in ensuring that its reputation as a premium chocolate brand is not overshadowed by changes in production strategy.
