Govt Targets Thaksin Tax Collection

Tax Collection from Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra
Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas confirmed on Tuesday that the Revenue Department would proceed with collecting 17.6 billion baht in tax from former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, following a Supreme Court ruling.
The court ruled on Monday that Thaksin must pay personal income tax on the 2006 sale of Shin Corporation shares. This decision overturned earlier rulings by the Central Tax Court and the Special Appeals Court, which had dismissed the tax assessment. The ruling now paves the way for enforcement proceedings.
Mr. Ekniti stated that the Revenue Department is currently reviewing the ruling in detail and will follow its framework and regulations on tracing assets and demanding payment, just as it does with all taxpayers.
Finance permanent secretary Lavaron Sangsnit mentioned that the department is expected to publicly clarify the procedures of tax collection within this week, as the case has drawn significant public attention.
Political Responses and Public Reactions
Meanwhile, Pheu Thai leader Julapun Amornvivat said on Tuesday that the party would not politicise Thaksin's tax case, despite the party's close ties with the former prime minister. He expressed sympathy for Thaksin but noted that the former prime minister is expected to fight the case through legal channels.
Pheu Thai list-MP Korkaew Pikulthong shared his concerns on Facebook, stating that recent developments involving Thaksin were "too much to accept." He was referring to the Office of the Attorney General's decision to appeal the Criminal Court's acquittal of him of lese majeste charges stemming from his 2015 interview with a South Korean newspaper, as well as the tax case.
Mr. Korkaew argued that these actions have pushed away Thaksin, who contributed significantly to the country, and have handed the country over to less capable individuals.
Former red-shirt leader Nattawut Saikuar also posted about these developments on Facebook, describing them as an injustice.
Ongoing Legal Challenges
Thaksin faces multiple legal challenges, including the lese majeste charges and the tax case. His legal team continues to work on defending him against these allegations. The situation highlights the complex interplay between legal processes and political dynamics in Thailand.
The ongoing cases have sparked widespread public debate and scrutiny. Many citizens are watching closely as the legal system navigates these high-profile matters. The outcome of these cases could have significant implications for both Thaksin and the broader political landscape in Thailand.
Implications for Tax Enforcement
The Supreme Court's ruling sets a precedent for how tax enforcement will be handled in similar cases. It underscores the importance of adhering to legal frameworks and ensuring transparency in the process. The Revenue Department's approach to tracing assets and demanding payment will be crucial in determining the success of this enforcement effort.
As the Revenue Department prepares to outline the procedures for tax collection, it is essential that the process remains fair and consistent with established regulations. This will help maintain public trust in the tax system and ensure that all taxpayers are treated equally.
Conclusion
The developments surrounding Thaksin Shinawatra's tax case reflect the complexities of legal and political processes in Thailand. The Supreme Court's ruling marks a significant step forward in the enforcement of tax obligations, while the reactions from various stakeholders highlight the broader implications of such cases.
As the situation unfolds, it will be important to monitor how the Revenue Department implements the court's decision and how the legal system handles future cases. The outcome of these proceedings will likely influence public perception and the overall integrity of the legal and tax systems in the country.
